If I include a BA segment in an around-the-world or circle pacific ticket will I have to pay the infamous BA YQ charges that apply to AVIOS tickets? Where there is a choice, such as JFK/LHR or LHR/HKG, is it advantageous to avoid BA? Or just avoid LHR in the first place?

Who are you proposing to ticket through??
Each airline has a different policy on YQ charges.

AA is generally more favorable but does include YQ for AA and BA.

LHR - the other big issue (particularly if in J or F) is the APD charges

Ticketing through AA. But if I include BA segments, will AA charge BA's YQ?

You have to call AA to get a quote. If there are more than $300 in tax you have to ask whether there is one YQ. Since AA BA tie up there are something changed regarding YQ. On BA operated transatlantic and AA stock YQ will be imposed. Not sure about other part of the world. So call AA and get a quote and you will know instantly.

Note that LAN generally do not charge fuel fines for travel on their ticket stock.

Yes. On each and every BA flight worldwide.

There should not be taxes if originating from Brazil on a BA revenue ticket even if you make a stopover enroute. The only thing you will pay is the UK APD tax when you stopover in LHR longer than 24 hours.

I'm booking an ex-HKG DCIR22 and in an effort to get an idea of the difference in fuel surcharges from booking a flight under one code or another, I've used the on-line tool to price some DONE3s that include the target flight from the DCIR22.

(For example, to see compare booking QF11 vs AA7362 (same flight), I'd set up a DONE4 that included SYD-LAX and price it both ways.)

SYD-LAX QF vs AA: $175 less booking QF.
LAX-SYD QF vs AA: $724 less booking QF.
DFW-NRT JL vs AA: $20 less booking JL.
HKG-LAX CX vs AA: $157 less booking AA.
LHR-JNB BA vs AA: $318 less booking AA.
LAX-LHR IB vs AA: $542 less booking AA.

I was really shocked just looking at QF vs AA, it was so $724 more for AA in one direction but $175 more for AA in the other direction.

So, it can really make a huge difference which carrier's code is used to book the same flight operated by the same carrier.

(Note that there are restrictions in many cases, e.g., the BA flight LHR-JNB can't be booked as an AA code unless it's a same-day connection from an AA coded flight.)

(Also, I apologize for posting the same information in two threads (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/18840009-post142.html), but I wasn't sure the best place to post this.)
