Hertz - 2012 Nissan Maxima Ride Report: The Good, Bad and Ugly

Traded in some free rental coupons for a weekend rental at TUL. I had reserved an F and was originally assigned a Camry:td:, but after much hassle was finally upgraded to a G. Should have had the guaranteed upgrade and the coupons also covered a G.

The good:
This was my first rental with the Maxima and I was surprised by the amount of room as well as how comfortable the seating was. It had a cloth interioir:td:, but was surprisingly comfortable. The engine had more than enough power and acceleration was better than average. This particular Maxima was equipped with a sun roof, which I always take advantage of:D. The audio was descent for a base model.

The bad:
This Maxima was not equipped with satellite radio:td::td:. It was also missing many "extras" that make a car appealing. My 2010 HHR has a feature that keeps the audio volume at a constant relative volume, the faster the car goes the louder the volume. The trunk has a large volume, but a relatively small opening. The steering wheel controls are random sized, and placed at random on the steering wheel. The button to change the display for temp, mpg, etc is not on the steering wheel, but behind it.

The ugly:
The transmission stinks. During a turn, RPM's could drop to 1200-1300. The car would hesitate for a second or two when you put your foot on the gas.

Final verdict:
This is a good car for long trips on the highway. It is roomy and comfortable. It also handles great on the highway. Not the best car for city driving, due to wacky transmission and size. For a premium car it is rather boring, and I am afraid they will be taking the place of the Grand Marquis. Next time I'm hoping for a Buick.

All the features you are discussing as missing are in the SV model of the Maxima, the S model is pretty much for fleets (unfortunately). Although, even if it had Satellite Radio, unless it was 3 months old or less, it would probably be on an expired subscription.

As for the transmission, I think a lot of the difference is that it is a CVT and they act very different then a normal 5 - 6 (or more) speed transmission and those who have not driven a vehicle equipped with one often find them a bit, odd.

Very few changes between 2012 and 2011 model years. Mainly cosmetic.

Also see the National forum thread. :)

I agree that the lack of satellite radio and other features that would otherwise be standard on competitor vehicles is problematic. Interior is rather dated.
