Well, here I am in Bangkok after the lengthy journey from Orlando to Bangkok. Orlando to New York on Delta and New York to Bangkok on Singapore economy. A380 JFK to Singapore and a B777 from Singapore to Bangkok.
Have flown on most airlines in my lifetime. However, this was the first time on Singapore. IMHO this airline is the best in the world, period. Equipment, cleanliness, crew efficiency, food, you name it. No other airline comes close. Thai and Korean are a distant 2nd and 3rd. Flight Attendants have to be the best anywhere. They are totally efficient, work hard the entire trip, have excellent dispositions, look good, and I am quite sure are fully capable of handling any emergency they are confronted with. An example might be when a somewhat inebriated eastern European type was out of his assigned seat and standing in the aisle for a long time yakking loudly with his two buddies who were seated. Making a general pest out of himself ad getting in everybody's way. One of the FAs told him to return to his seat. He ignored her once. A couple of minutes later she returned and told him in no uncertain terms to return to his seat. I guess he got the message as we never saw him again for the rest of the flight.
The aircraft was kept super clean including all of the bathrooms. The food was as good or better than most airlines serve in first class. My wife who is a gourmet cook raved about the food. Drinks are all free and there is a good compliment of wine, spirits, and beer, including all of the standard soft drinks and juice. If you need anything just ask and they bring it to you. AVOD is seat back screens with so many choices it's ridiculous. There are ethernet, usb, and power receptacles at the seat.
Flights were all on time, smooth, and with good take offs and landings. Boarding was by status, first, business, elites, and then economy by sections. Fairly well organized for such a huge plane.
Now that I've gotten all of the positives out of the way I'll address a couple of negatives that I encountered.
The A380 is a very big plane. However, inside there does not seem to be as much space as a B747 or B777. Also, there is nowhere to go. Unless you want to just walk up and down the aisles and run in place at the bathrooms or galley area, there is no place to basically congregate. At least on the Boeing planes you do have areas where you can congregate or just get away from your seat and be on your feet for a while. I honestly don't care for the interior of this aircraft at all.
The seats are the new type where they have all of the features you could ever use for business or pleasure. The seats themselves are built so that when you lean back they sort of swing inward so that no one is intruding in another person's space. There are also foot rests that adjust to low and high positions. The footrests really help your legs on a long flight. Although the seats are not particularly extra comfortable, they do the job. I did not find them to be uncomfortable. What I did find was that Singapore has configured their seats with 32 inch pitch. This is not satisfactory in my way of thinking. Leg room was not unbearable. However, both Korean and Thai seats are 34 inch pitch. Singapore should make their seats 34 inch pitch also. 34 inch pitch is fairly comfortable.
The only other thing that I found not up to par is more of a technical problem of Airbus. Where we were seated was freezing. Many people complained to the FAs. They tried their best to adjust the temperature, as part of the cabin was freezing and another part of the cabin was on fire. But, to little avail. Seems as though it's a manufacturing maintenance problem and probably not the airline's fault.
So,if you want to fly an airline that definitely cares about it's passengers, in doing the best for them possible, then you want to fly Singapore. My vote for airline of the, not year but, century.
