Hi

As a gold with my license number in the system, will I need the paper portion of my license?

I haven't needed it the last 2 times I've rented but that has been at some half arsed Franchise in Short Hills NJ.

Hiring in LAS will should I bring the Paper license, or can I simply hand over my Gold card, like I've done in NJ?

(I suspect the answer will be take it just in case, which is good advice, I just know Im going to forget though!)

Cheers!

I've never rented a car at any rental company where they did NOT wanted to see my license. (And, yes, think about some police patrols checking your papers...)

I've rented, as a Gold member, at both HLE's and corporate airport locations, and have never needed to show the paper part of my license. However, technically your 'license' includes the plastic card and the paper part, and isn't complete without both, so I imagine they could ask for both, and I would have both anyway in case I was stopped by the police. However, I doubt many people in America even know we have the paper part of our license - I've never been asked for it at any rental counter with any agency, including those used by UK tour operators at MCO who would be well used to dealing with British tourists.

You are absolutely right, I think. I also never have heard that you have kind of two parts of the license. Here in Germany we only have one piece, that credit card-size plastic ID.

I always take an International Driving License with me (which is nothing else but a translation into several languages), since our licenses only have German on it.

Since you are UK I think the plastic part is enough, since it is in English anyway.

Things like this I usually put at the front door to fall over it :) that way I can be pretty sure not to froget it!

Its the remembering to put in at the front door that I have trouble with!

If I remember, I will stick it in my Carry On bag tonight, where it can sit safely for a week till I travel

I will then no doubt not need it in LAS and forget its in my carry on bag when I do need it in 5 years time!

well, as long as you have the same carry-on bag with you in five years time... :D

You have two options.

Bring it and not be asked for it
Have the counter insist on seeing it and not having it

as you have not left yet, one option makes way more sense to me than the other one.

Bring it and if they ask for it you have it, if they don't ask no loss.

My experience, too. With Gold Canopy service, I've always been asked for my license by the exit booth attendant. With Gold Counter service, they want to see it at the counter.

Bring it.

yeah, but I think Cap'n Benj has kind of two licenses, one plastic card and a paper one. And in theory he should have both present since they kind of belong together. But like he said, no one will ever know that such a case even exists, I think. So if he just has the plastic card and does forget the paper one I don't think he'll get a problem... (Nevertheless I bring both with me as well)

Not exactly 2 licenses. A newer style UK license just has 2 parts a paper part and a photocard part. Older licenses are paper only

Not taking both parts of the license is a bad idea ; no need to get the paper part out unless it is asked for but there is the possibility that (a) the agent is aware that endorsements are listed on the paper part and (b) even if the hertz agent doesn't want it, isn't it a legal requirement to have a valid license when driving in the US? suppose a police office stops the car

You definitely need to take both parts of the UK licence, I have been asked for both parts at most major airports in the US, especially MIA, however I think that's because they are used to us Brits renting cars.

This has happened to me once, at a downtown NYC Avis location where they were extremely short on cars. I got the strong impression they were trying anything they could think of to avoid giving me a car.

May I quote from my latest reservation email (bold by me) made on hertz.co.uk?

"WARNING MESSAGES:
International drivers’ license may be required for non resident renters
For Photocard Licenses - paper counter part is also required
RENTERS UNDER 25 YEARS OF AGE CHECK POLICY FOR EXCEPTIONS
..."

That should answer all questions.
