Coming in through Immigration at EDI at the weekend I noticed 5 new pieces of equipment off to the right. They looked to have an area to put your passport for scanning and then a short passage to the other side so possibly some kind of automated entry system to be introduced soon.

Can anyone expand on exactly what they are?

It sounds like the e-passport gates I've seen elsewhere in the UK. So far, they've only been for EU/EEA citizens...

I came through in late April and they were there but not in use.

Did they look like this?

If so they are the e-passport gates.

I also saw them last week and they definitely look like e-passport gates. Not sure where they are ultimately going to be installed as at the moment they appear to lead into a wall.

Difficult to tell from that angle but a good possibility. Does the green arrow indicate where you put your passport and the sign just above the reader show a picture of an opened passport indicating how to place it on the glass?

I was through quickly on Sunday but any enhancement to the system should be welcomed. At least if they've been installed elsewhere then hopefully any bugs will be ironed out by now.
