Other European Frequent Flyer Programs - Easyjet carryon luggage, how strict are they to size restrictions?

This is Easyjets policy on carryon luggage.

56 x 45 x 25cm

My carryon is slightly bigger at;

68 x 45 x 25cm

The difference is a mere 12 cm on the overall length of the carryon. Should I anticipate Easyjet making a big deal about the size difference?

5 inches bigger is likely to be noticeable.

Basically, upcharging for extras is how easyJet makes its money. I doubt they will miss the chance to make some more money from you.

Thanks Doc. I thought the same thing. the difference is less then 5 inches. Not sure if I want to prepay or take my chances at the AP.

They have these wire frames with the maximum dimensions for putting your luggage in to check your compliance and I do not think there is any tolerance built in -I have the impression that the use of these frames is dependent on airport of departure and mind set of the gate assistant - but they do make the gamble a fairly risky game, especially if you also would have checked luggage.

The purpose of these frames is of course to make a fuzz about the size of your luggage.

Overweight (over 20 kg) is charged at 12 EUR/kg

I've never been checked going out of GVA multiple times with a 55x35x23-25cm bag. Been asked to put it in the wireframe coming from UK or other continental locations. IMO, easyjet Switzerland staff is a little more lax than the easyjet UK staff. Don't gamble otherwise. Those wireframes are known to fit a little snug. YMMV.

My recent experience:

STN - no evidence of anyone checking baggage size

PRG - gate agents were taking a good look but were not putting baggage in sizers and I didn't see anyone being asked to give up their bags

LJU - Easyjet agents were prowling up and down the security line and pulling people over to put their bags in the sizers. I was one of many people who got pulled over, despite having a bag that was well within limits

how about out of Madrid? Its a relatively short flight, MAD to TLS.

I would not take my chances on it. As others said, the difference is easily noticeable (I assume it is a standard wheeled carryon, so you can not really squeeze it).I saw many times for ex-Spain flights. Go to your booking and add one bag there - or bring a smaller bag. MAD to TLS is not a really short flight for EZY

My luggage was size-checked MAD-GVA, well within limits. Something about full flight, no extra space and people willing to check luggage at the gate would be given priority boarding.

On both my recent Easyjet flights (MLA to LGW and BUD to SFX) I have either been asked or overheard others being asked if they want to check cabin luggage into the hold for free because it is a full flight.

So, if the OP was able to ascertain that their flight was full then there is a chance you may get it checked in for free.

To reinforce what others have said "EasyJet are not quite as anal as Ryanair but I would not risk it" Quite a few random checks.

Ryanair hardly checked me, but Easyjet coming and going SXF-FCO. Those luggage sizers need eject buttons.

Yes. That's 20% larger than the maximum limit and probably won't fit in the overhead bins, never mind a sizer.

Interesting discussion and topical for me as I did an FT search to see where to post my question relating to EZY carry-on. My wife and I are going BDS to MXP to connect with AA and EZY seems the best option. We'll have to pay for 2 checked bags but its still pretty reasonable. However, we're used to 1 carry-on/1 personal item and that's a no-no for EZY - they make it pretty clear one bag only.

However, their stated max size is a pretty generous 56x45x25 = 22"x17.7"x 9.9" (all dimensions rounded down slightly).

So I was wondering if anyone knew if someone made a relatively simply "bag" that was max EZY size that one could put items into. Kind of like the RedOxx Small Aviator Bag http://www.redoxx.com/Aviator-Duffel-Bags/Small-Aviator-Bag/91011-SM/150/Product which would be perfect if it was a few inches larger.

For example, my wife travels with a small Muji roller that is 17"x12"x9" or so plus a purse. If there was a "macro" bag of max EZY size, she could put both in, zip it up and we'd carry-on "1" bag. I would think in the UK/EUR market, there would be demand for such a thing. Does it exist or do I have to have two made? I would think that a thin but strong material would add little/no weight and could be folded up and stowed when not needed (heck, it would make a great laundry bag otherwise).

Second, on EZY website on carry-on baggage, no reference to max weight. Does anyone know if there's a limit? It's been a while since we EZY'd or Ryan'd so I've gotten a little fuzzy on that.

Thanks

OK - looked at EZY's conditions of carriage so I can answer question #2:

__________________________________________________ ________
no weight restriction applies to the one item of Hand Baggage within reasonable limits - i.e. a passenger must be able to place and retrieve the one item of Hand Baggage safely in the overhead storage lockers without assistance. On occasion it may be necessary to impose a weight limit for operational reasons. In this instance Your Hand Baggage will be placed in the aircraft hold at no additional charge provided You have complied with all applicable Baggage requirements and limitations contained in Our Terms and Conditions.

So, get a big bag & lift a lot of weights!

I've seen the "macro" bags at a couple of airports.
