Trip Reports - Quasi-trip report: UA v TG v SQ in Y (aka UA ain't half bad)

Just returned from a couple of weeks in Bali on an award trip. As there was ample saver Y available, but nothing reasonable in C or F, I bit the bullet and booked a 140k award for my wife and I IAD-LHR-BKK(SIN)-DPS. Amazingly, the 2 UA legs were the best, save for the SQ leg LHR-SIN. Here's a synopsis:

UA 924 IAD-LHR (772 new config)

CBP decided to hold the plane for an extra 2 hours after it came in from FRA, thus pretty much ensuring that we would miss our TG connection to BKK. That notwithstanding, I scored 20J and K, which are absolutely brilliant coach seats in the new config. Service was great and the flight was comfortable. Upon arrival in T1 at LHR, a UA rep was waiting for us and apologized profusely for the delay. She has already rebooked us on SQ, so we headed over to T3 and the SQ lounge. The agents working the SQ lounge were outstanding, saving us a trip to the transit desk by getting us great seats and chasing down our bags.

SQ 319 LHR-SIN (773)

The SQ folks got us two Y seats with a blocked middle for the longest flight of the trip, which allowed us to stretch out and sleep most of the 14 hours we were on board. The food was by far the best, and the service was courteous, albeit it a bit cold. All in all, the entire experience was exactly what Y travel should be. I understand that they are shortly replacing the 773 on this flight with another 380.

SQ 946 SIN-DPS (772)

Older plane packed with folks on holiday. The plane was definitely tired, but they still managed a full food and drink service on a sub-2 hour flight. They did manage to leave our bags in SIN, but the agents in DPS stated they would get them up to Ubud as soon as possible. They weren't kidding, as we were sitting at the hotel bar an hour after we checked in, and our bags arrived.

TG 432 DPS-BKK (772)

Another beat-up plane stuffed with folks on holiday. Service was mediocre and the food was utterly inedible. Someone managed to decorate the lav, the aisle, and the escalator at BKK with their stomach contents, which pretty much summed up the flight for me.

TG 910 BKK-LHR (346)

Plane was in much better condition, but was packed to the gills. Service wasn't any better, nor was the food, which bordered on inedible without 3 Singhas to wash it down. The Recaro seats reminded me of the US CRJ900s, and were abysmal for a 12 hour flight.

UA 919 LHR-IAD (772)

Another new config 772. We were supposed to fly out on 939, which is a 763, but it was cancelled. UA again stepped up and proactively rebooked us onto another, earlier, flight. We did end up with separated E+ middles, but pharmaceuticals helped out immensely. The plane was clean, the service very good, and the food moderately edible.

In summary, I'm not at all surprised that SQ was, by far, the best of the bunch, but I really did expect much more out of TG. My UA experience was actually very good, although charging for booze TATL is somewhat tacky (I'm usually in C when I do TATL for work, so I was unaware of this...). TG just plain sucked, and reminded me of flying US, which surprised the hell out of me. It's probably a much better experience up front, although the seats really didn't look that great.

I came home to an e-mail from UA letting me know that my UG for 76 tomorrow cleared 3 days out, as well.

Thanks for a nice report. Glad UA was tolerable in economy. BTW, US has improved tremendously, especially if you're on one of their Airbii, with AVOD, tolerable food, and decent room. I think you just got a bad trip on Thai; I've had decent luck with them.

 Glad I just finished lunch...

I am really shocked there was nothing available in business from Washington to Bali in May. That just doesnt sound right with hundreds of options out there!

It was available, but everything in the saver buckets involved ridiculous routings, insanely long layovers, or both. There's no way in hell I'm using full awards for C or F when there are uber-cheap Y options available with manageable layovers. Actually, if I could have managed the EWR-SIN nonstop on SQ, I would've sprung for that, but nothing showed available on any of the booking tools I used to research the trip.

Theoretically, I could have also burned a bunch of Amex points and done KLM IAD-AMS-DPS, but I'd rather swim and walk.

Not surprised your short haul on TG sucked. I did a short-haul on one of their 330s in F and it wasn't all that much better than UA's domestic F. In fact, UA's domestic F had better food and IFE...

Curious what you thought of the seat pitch on SQ and TG compared to E+.

If there is one thing that keeps me on UA for the international stuff, it is the 34" pitch in E+.

Strange. Didn't think you could. SQ has always blocked those seats for redemption like it does for C and F on 77W and 380

The 772ER on both TG and SQ and the A346 on TG have 34" of pitch in Y, and feature the newish style seats where the bottom slides more than the back reclines. The 773ER on SQ shows 32", but it seemed like more, but, then again, we had a row to ourselves, so it didn't much matter.

great, concise report! I have been afraid to try TG and now I am glad that I didn't!

TG short flights are kind of hit or miss. I have had pretty decent success on long hauls. Miss the direct from the east coast to BKK. Just booked a flight for Nov MUC-BKK on an upgraded (hopefully) 747. Had the option to go LHR-BKK but looked like an old configuration and your review seems to confirm my worry. Have heard many stories though of TG aircraft changes (could it be? more than UA?) so it may be a crap shoot till the bitter end.

Good report, saw your good luck with UA rebookings until I saw what CO status you have.

I guess I haven't updated my sig in awhile. I'm actually 1K, so I'm sure that had something to do with it.

Not sure why this was moved, as the general gist was to point out that UA isn't all that bad after the ill advised merger...

I'm not so sure United forum folks would agree with this lol.

My non-elite relationship with United and their system and international rebookings would say otherwise, but that could probably happen with many airlines.

And since when 330s on TG have F-class:confused::confused::confused::confused:

Think he meant TG J, which is what domestic F really is ...

.

The TG slanted C seats are not that great. But F is fine though showing its age a bit compared to the alternatives

Doesn't UA fly the "ghetto birds" to Hawaii? Now extrapolate to DPS and you'll see why SQ's/TG's planes to a leisure destination aren't wonders of modern airplanes...

I wasn't expecting much on the short flights to DPS from either airline, as it is a leisure destination and the flights are very short (2 hours from SIN and 3.5 from BKK). I was, however, expecting good things on the 12 hour ride BKK-LHR, and it really was not a great experience. Not utterly horrid, but definitely not the cut above that TG was purported to be, and which SQ was.

Yes, UA does use ghetto birds on some HNL flights, but they also use the 764, 772 (ex-IAD), and possibly the 738 from the West Coast (I know they use it for ITO, but not sure on HNL).
