EL AL Matmid - Why I'm not flying El Al anymore

I fly for work purposes 4-5 times a year to NY from TLV. I fly economy, and generally choose the lowest economy fare, although my company lets me choose whichever carrier I want, so as long as it's economy they don't bug me to take the absolute cheapest flight.

In comparing the benefits of the various Frequent Flyer programs of El AL, Delta and United for someone like me who flies 4-5 times a year, the best airline for me to choose is actually Delta, for the following reasons:

Pros:
1. Silver status after 25000 miles (2 1/2 roundtrips) which will let me take a second suitcase for free. Possibly earn Gold status if I hit 50k miles.
2. Earn miles usable on skyteam alliance partners which includes Airfrance, KLM, Alitalia, and Korean Air, besides Delta.
3. Newly upgraded 747-400 with USB charging ports and a real In flight entertainment system VOD.

Cons:
Only one flight per day and only to JFK

For El AL:
Pros:
1. Earn 100-400 Matmid points per round trip - depending on fare class paid. As I checked that most of the time based on the fare classes I would have bought I would earn about 200 Matmid points per trip. That would give me Silver status after about 5 round trips in 12 month period which would let me take a second suitcase for free.
2. Alternatively earn regular American Airlines miles per trip which can be used for OneWorld or El Al flights. Good redemption mileage rates using American miles for El Al flights to Asia.
3. If space available, can upgrade to business class for $700 on board the plane.
4. More flights per day to NY area - 2-4 flights to JFK, and 1-2 flights to Newark depending on season and day of week.

Cons:
1. Poor in flight entertainment systems - on some planes there is VOD, but it is very old system. On other planes it is a just a loop of 12 channels.
2. Some planes have power sockets in economy, some don't.
3. IF you get a cheap fare (TUGO classes), you only earn 50 Matmid points each way to NY, or 50% of regular American Airlines miles.

United:
Pros:
1. 25000 miles (2 1/2 round trips) gives you Silver status.
2. 2 Flights per day, but only to Newark.
3. Miles can be used on United, and other airlines in Star Alliance, including Lufthansa.
4. Good IFE VOD

Cons:
1. Silver status on United does NOT let you take a second suitcase for free for international flights.
2. Night time flight from TLV lands at ridiculously early 4:20AM at Newark.

So based on all of the above, for now at least I'm going to direct as much of my flights as I can to use Delta. One factor I did not consider here is availability of award tickets. It's quite possible that Delta/Skyteam award availability is lousy. But I will see.

I'd love to hear if I've missed any pros or cons. Obviously if someone flies only Business class or YSM economy class, then it might make more sense to fly El Al.

IT is quite lousy.

i believe the "lousy" timed LY flights are pretty upgradable.

The CO flights aren't bad (but again, don't expect great redemption opportunities on the nonstops), and if you pick a program like Aegean's (A3), you can get *G status (which gets you 3 bags on United) it only takes like 20k miles.

If you choose A3, you just have to make sure to buy higher fare classes, as the lower ones don't earn 100% miles.

OP, regarding the UA flight that arrives too early - the DL flight also lands early in the morning. I like the UA flight, as I sleep at night, wake up in the morning with little to no jetlag.

Yes, ST has lousy redemption. Nothing like *A. And yes, *S sucks.

Neat trick with Aegean, maybe I'll go with United then.

New trick for me too, seriously thinking of transferring from skyteam to Staralliance.

Any comments?

Well known among *A members (pop into the LH forum).

Why you should go to A3? easy gold (=priority boarding, extra luggage, and lounge access)
Why you shouldn't? no one really ever reported using the miles...

As for the original question: I guess you insist on a direct flight. But if you allow connections, you increase your possibilities significantly with ST or *A. With AZ/AF/KL/OK you get the 5:30-6:00 am flight to Europe and then a connection to NYC.
With *A you get LX/LH/OS/LO at 5:30-6:00 am, SN at 1:20 am, TK with several flights, and A3, and this is before the new SK schedule. Additionally, you get the America-based airlines: US via PHL or AC via YYZ (AC has a good product in Y, good IFE, and the extra time you spend in the connection is mostly wasted on clearing immigration in YYZ, which is usually faster and nicer than any NYC airport I've set my foot at).

I highly recommend switching. The A3 *G thing is well known in the *A forums. See M&M or the UA forum.

In London, you have direct flights on BA or LY. But if you're with ST, then they have no competitive advantage over *A in London. From TLV, you have more options with *A (AC, UA, US, LH, LX, SN, OS, LO, TK, and there may be more) many of whom have great premium cabins. And depending on the program, you have some with solid redemption rates.
Problem is you need *G for anything as *S is useless. (Only *G gets 2 free bags. *G for lounge access, and sometimes only *G for priority services, though that can differ. When I was *S flying Y on LX, I still managed to board with C.)

In my opinion the best way for you to travel to new york in terms of quality of service and gaining status I would say British Airways.

Blue member in BA (earning between 0-299 tier points a year) is equivalent to a Matmid member in EL-AL.
Bronze member/BA (earning 300-599 T/Pa year) = Silver member EL-AL
Silver member/BA (earning 600-1499 T/P a year)= Gold Member EL-AL
Gold member/BA (earning 1500-4999 T/P a year) = Platinum Member EL-AL
GGL member/BA (earning 5000+ T/P a year)= Top Platinum EL-AL

Now assuming you are buying the cheapest non flexible economy class ticket: TLV-LHR-NYC-LHR-TLV, you will earn 140 tier points for the whole journey, after 5 journeys you earn 700 T/P which will be above the 600 t/p requirement to become a Silver member (equivalent to Gold in EL-AL!), once you earn that you are entitled to enter BA lounges around the world and use the amazing facilities in JFK and LHR!

Now, assuming you are buying flexible economy class tickets you earn 280 t/p for each whole journey, so after 5 trips like that you will earn 1400 tier points which in that case you will have to earn only another 100 T/P to become a BA Gold (equivalent to EL-AL Platinum!!)

Moreover, the Avios (miles) that you will earn will benefit you better than you use your points right now with EL-AL.

All the Best!

OP, since I assume you keep kosher another element you may want to consider is the ksml served on the various airlines. some are significantly better then others...

Agree completely. You will not be sorry with BA, and the layover in LHR especially if you're a gold card holder is an absolute pleasure.

GGL member/BA (earning 5000+ T/P a year)
Or 3000 TPs in two consecutive years.
