Qantas Frequent Flyer - Wife rages after SC run booked..... anyone?

Recently jumped ship from NZ to QF, sitting on Silver from very limited OW flying last year.... Membership year started Feb.. Done 4 QF TT sectors so far, 2x Y + 2x J, all in April with double SC, that's 400 easy SC!

Last week, the TT business special was on, $1249 for 320 SC, that will push me pass the gold requirement...can't resist that, booked same day return to Syd for June...

Then, the drama unfolds, wife checked credit card spending, and i was just being honest to tell her about SC and gold status etc etc..... And i ended up here in the living room at 1.30am....

Would love to hear from others to share your story too...

So you'll get the status and not her? Just wait for the drama when she accompanies you and when you have the ticket in J and she has a ticket down the back. If she is pissed off now, you aint seen nothing yet. Of course, in that case you'll happily swap BPs - wont you:(

Of course, even more drama if you both are ticketed in J and she is invol downgraded due to an oversell. From first hand you really don't want this even if (in my first hand experience) a MCO is offered as compensation (by LH).

But the only real way to demonstrate the value of your status endeavours is to take her to lunch in the SYD or MEL First Lounge before that afternoon flight.

Should have told her "At least I wasn't seeing another woman." ;)

Seriously, she will get over it. Mrs. SFO has finally accepted my crazy MRs as part of life, and knows she gets to enjoy the fruits of my flying obsession labour.

I am so used to sleeping on the couch concerning mileage running and other things that I leave a blanket there. My wife doesn't understand and never will. My wife could care less if she sits in the front or back of an airplane. I just deal with it.
I'm not quite sure how long you both are married but I've been in the doghouse since the 1990's. You kinda get used it it after a while.

Now go ahead and ask your spouse: "If there are 2 guys having a conversation and there are no women around -- Are they still wrong?"

Which would only be demonstrated by having a 1st class ticket since gold status would not afford admission

My wife's first international flight was SYD-LAX in 1K on QF744 thanks to a comp op-up from QF. First international flight without me was SYD-PEK in Y with comp Gold status. First A380 flight was comp op-up to 4A LHR-SYD on QF and first SQ flight was Suite class on the A380 with two suites assigned (one for sleeping the other for eating).

Second DJ flight since having DJ status was an op-up into J.

For many years my wife didn't actually know where the domestic QF club and international J lounge in SYD actually was until the days she tried to use the dom J lounge and F lounge without me as was politely turned away.

No issues maintaining status in this house and for the first time this year my wife plans to fly her way to Platinum so I can spend some time at home.

lol.... i tried to explain the beautiful lounge in SYD or MEL, even though i couldn't get in with just Gold, but only 4 month into the membership year, i am hope of Platinium...

Her response was, "tell me which restaurant we couldn't afford with $1200"..... so i was a bit speechless....

Thanks SFO777. I hope so over time.... All my status runs were in NZ domestic before, where the cost is much smaller, and she equates that to my drinking money, so no big deal.

I showed her your TR in QF and CX F, and she was impressed, so saving points now.... lol

I understand your situation very well.
Personally I maintain my WP via TT to visit family and friends in SYD. Mrs Blackcloud and Little Miss Blackcloud travel with me twice (50/50 spilt in WHY/J) a year, and yes she really appreciates the lounge access (especially First).
However even with the grest TT J specials, I have booked 3 this year, I would never consider the expense for a fly in/out SC run. I previsouly used the LAN runs, but that meant overnighting in AKL and leaving SYD early. I have reason to fly over a weekend and if discussed beforehand we come to an agreement on the length of visit. Now Mrs Blackcloud accepts the higher cost for me to fly QF, only on TT J specials, so that I can spend more time with family and friends in SYD.
For pure SC runs I used to do QF NZ domestic trips quite regaularly and enjoyed them and so it as part of a hobby. Now JQ, I do not enjoy, they are more expensive than QF NZ were, and try to avoid where possible.
If I need to do an SC run now I will use a JASA, reducing the actual $ expense, for a day when I am in Australia, especially if there is a double SC promo.
Just to summarise, I would not even with the great value TT J prices, do a SC run, however try including SWMBO in a trip next time. Time with my family, especially with a gorgeous 8 month girl, is too precious to me so I have now planned my trips well in advance taking advantage of specials where possible.

Mine was the opposite to OP, received Qantas double points offer, she said go for it, did CNS/TSV/BNE/DRW as JASA return was about $500 inc accom. 2 nights and 48K points, took me to Gold, been with her in number of Q lounges since. August off to USA can use AA lounges there with guest as SG.

I would not do QF TT J special either, but this time, it came with double SC promo, effectively making $/SC much less than LAN. LAN is still the prefered option for other times.

And this is the first time i'm doing same day SC run, probably last time too..... simply because i can't afford more days away before end of June, when the double sc promo ends.

It was the latter 90's when SWMBO coined the phrase "Qantas Widow", but yes, she does appreciate lounge access etc.

She does not mind me doing SC runs as long as when she flies, there is none of this economy/coach "rubbish" ... (and waitlisted upgrades, like those of QF international, don't "cut the mustard!") ... :p

I wonder if we ever cross paths on the LAN run. Looking back instead of my 6 p.a. LAN runs I have noticed only 2 in the last 12, this is a result of QF offering bonus SC and better sale fares.

You do realise that August counted for double SC as well.;)

The only "real" SAABs have wings. The winged versions are nice for the first few minutes, but somewhat tedious after 3 hrs without a break. Are the car versions any quieter? And why do the car versions need so many spare parts? :)

Trans Tasman

And if you dabble in FT fora that discuss flights across the North Atlantic, this is acronymed as TATL.

Also to the OP, my wife used to be against any FF points schemes until we got to fly BOS to LHR for $2.72 AUD and SYD-BKK-SIN-SYD for $174.
Saving up points for a J RTW at the moment.

She will come around hopefully.

Mine just accepted it and almost said "just keep taking the red ones and you'll feel better in the morning ...". Until one evening I wandered out to the kitchen and said "would you like to do a Concorde flight LHR-JFK-LHR with some of your QF points?". The world revolved in a whole different manner after that episode.

Last year my wife went away in Y for her work. She has no problem now with my FF pursuits mainly point chasing.

My other half was a bit aggro with me a couple of xmas ago when I bought online 50 CD/DVDs, mostly multiples of the same range too, that had a 500pt bonus as part of a local supermarkets frequent shopper scheme. These you could transfer to BA's scheme. When I did, they had a promo on too of doubling the value of your transfer.

Last month we flew J LHR/EZE-GIG/LHR and he is far less resistant now to me signing him up to various card schemes etc, but might draw the line at a pure MR!!

I think the good times are becoming less at the supermarket. Far fewer promos like that. There was a 10 times points on a new credit card here for 3 months. I got 75,000 miles, but some got close to or over 1 million!!

Same here. I infected her with the J-Class Virus, Lounges and Fast Track. She now understands that I book connecting flights to weird destinations, that I come home at night after a business meeting that ended at noon, because I took a little "detour" on the way back. Sometimes I just receive a "you are crazy" that I reply with "yes, you knew that before and it is one of the reasons that you married me!"

She loves her shiny cards - QF-PG from me and a self flown LH-Silver.

For MRs together I just tell her that we need a weekend together. She gets a choice of destinations and I book the flights. So never pure MRs but milage optimized weekend trips or holidays.
