This is my first Mileage run post, so feel free to move it elsewhere, mods.

I just booked this vacation fare from JFK-DUS, with layovers in either AMS or CDG in T. There are a bunch of dates in June, bookable on DL.com. Sample dates June 11th-22nd, $660.

It looks like it is about 8 cpm, but it isn't a bad fare if you need to get to Europe in June.

Yeah it looks like all summer long. Plus around the same price NYC to Berlin.

Newb here...forgive my newbness.

When factoring in a CPM should I factor in my bonus miles? So a regular .05 CPM with GM 100% bonus would really be .025 CPM?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, unless you're more concerned with CPQM (cents per qualifying mile).

And it's 5 CPM. .05 CPM would be an unbelievable deal. :D

So this KLM LAX-Muscat, Oman for 5 CPM ($932) would be a good deal for non-MQM CPM when factoring in GM bonus?

Borderline mileage run material, BUT a great fare for summer travel to Europe! Might have to get in on this... Thanks to the OP!

If you need/want the award miles, maybe. It depends on how much you value the award miles at in the program you are crediting to. I wouldn't pure mileage run for award miles unless it was 2/3rds or less of the mileage value, in case of a devaluation or being unable to use the miles quickly. I have pure MRed for 0.99 cpm before when including my AA 100% bonus though, as I value AA miles at 2 cpm.

This fare to DUS/BER is a good summer fare, and it's been around for a few months. The original thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mileage-run-deals/1329591-ac-ewr-ber-dus-596-june-july-august.html) was active for a few days and then faded into obscurity, but the fare never went away, I checked it periodically. Presumably the fare was introduced by AB and was then matched by other airlines to the AB hub cities.

Well, I've been looking to take my family from LAX-PIT later this summer. It's not a traditionally cheap route ($1.5-2K, typically for the four of us). I could do one more long-haul route and take the four of us on miles.

So, $900-1,000, could be a substantial savings. Any thoughts on my thinking? Perhaps there's another way that I haven't learned about MR's or tricking for cheap bookings to PIT.

Thanks

That might make sense then. The valuations change when you have a specific award, and also are close to it. All miles are only worth something when you use them in truth. Miles sitting in an account are worthless. I'm one of those "use my miles for major international trips so I don't have to sit in economy on really long flights when I want to be on vacation" people. If doing that MR can accomplish your goals of going to PIT, then I'd say it is worth it. It really depends on what you want to do with the miles, if using them on that trip would prevent you from using them on another trip that might be harder to pay for.

Maybe you can try to find if there is a cheaper location nearby (CLE, BUF, maybe even PHL etc.) and rent a car and drive if that makes sense if you end up paying for the flights. I'm debating that for a trip to STL this summer, STL is way more expensive than ORD normally from BOS, and it might be cheaper for me to rent a car from ORD and drive to STL (5.5 hours drive each way though). I've done the drives around western PA so I know that you might not want to do that as well, especially with children. Good luck!

Not to be "that guy," but since when does 8cpm count as a MR? I was under the impression that its <5cpm to be a MR for a non-premium cabin.

Great fare. I live in Amsterdam, so what would happen if you:

DUS-AMS-JFK-CDG-DUS

And i exit at CDG? and take the train back to AMS?

Yes this newbee is learning! :p

Yes this newbee is learning! :p

a) the fare is for NYC-DUS-NYC - it is not for trips starting in DUS. Depending on when you want to travel, there are cheaper tickets from DUS with airlines other than DL/KL/AF. Depending on your dates, it's cheaper to fly from AMS than to fly DL from DUS.

b) As long as you don't check luggage, you should be able to leave your itinerary at CDG and travel home by train from there (but why not travel home by train from DUS? It's much closer, and you can travel almost all the way in an ICE train for cheaper than the Thalys from Paris)

c) Why not book a trip that routes you NYC-AMS-DUS on the way back, instead of going through CDG? No train necessary then.

Nothing would "happen", except that you will not earn the mileage / segment credit for the last flight.

Is DUS-AMS not cheaper/easier than CDG-AMS on the train?

Reading thru the rules, the following caught my eye:

Transfer restrictions
UNLIMITED TRANSFERS PERMITTED ON THE FARE COMPONENT FREE
FREE ON DL ONLY IN EACH DIRECTION
FREE ON NW ONLY IN EACH DIRECTION
FREE BETWEEN DL AND NW IN EACH DIRECTION
FARE BREAK SURFACE SECTORS NOT PERMITTED AND EMBEDDED
SURFACE SECTORS PERMITTED ON THE FARE COMPONENT.

Just curious ... is this a recycled fare ?

Probably. Airlines don't update a lot of those, or the routing rules. Unless someone else shows up and IATA gives the the NW code to them, it isn't an issue. AA still has plenty of routing rules allowing BOS-STL on routes, but they haven't flown it for a couple of years now (only WN flies it now).

Apologies if this is too tangential, but has anyone had any success booking this on UA using a travel cert?

Yesterday, I managed to get a $670 EWR-FRA-DUS-TXL-EWR fare to reprice to $170 after applying a $500 travel voucher (Promo Code: 12TCVA) that I'd received for taking a VDB. I made the mistake of holding off on making a booking until I got home that night, at which point, when I again attempted to apply the voucher, it wouldn't take.

Three Gold Desk reservations agents say the voucher won't work because FRA-DUS and DUS-TXL are codeshares (UA flight numbers, but operated by LH). However, Rule 8 of the voucher notes, "Travel permitted on flights operated by United and United Express. Certain codeshare flights may be valid for redemption." Two agents said that second sentence refers to UAX flights, which, given the certainty of the preceding sentence, seems not merely redundant but contradictory.

In short, does anyone see a way I could use my voucher for the booking (currently held through midnight today)? I'm prepared to ask to apply it only to the UA segments, though that may be impossible. It's just annoying that the voucher took once and now won't apply again.

I would remove the voucher code to be safe.

I guess in this case your best bet would be to do Berlin instead of Dusseldorf. Berlin has the same fare filed as DUS on UA [slightly cheaper too] and you can stick with all UA metal.

I was looking into this fare earlier when the original post came out as I needed to get to Italy in July and this allowed a stopover in MXP. Was quite reasonable for summer travel to Italy as I recall.

Yes, the UA fare does, though it's $100.- extra:

United UA KHNC2N NYC to BER
Stopover restrictions

2 STOPOVERS PERMITTED ON THE PRICING UNIT - 1 IN EACH
DIRECTION IN EUROPE AT USD 100.00 EACH.

When the fare first came out a few months ago, I looked into this stopover option as a cheaper way to travel to MUC in July but in the end decided against it.

I have been watching this fare for a few weeks and was all good through last night. Researching it today and DL.com is giving an error message using the BER code. Checked Orbitz and its not even showing Delta flights (or the partner flights AirFrance or KLM). Anyone seeing anything different.

Priced DUS on my target dates and seeing prices now over $1300...

Hopefully the deal will come back.... and soon finally ready to book! :)

The BER error may be because the new BER airport is not set to open until March now. There are probably issues with the codeshares, and not being redone yet. DUS is still active in October, that I can see.

A whole bunch of mainly legacy airlines fly from DUS - try here (http://www.skyscanner.com/flights-to/dus/airlines-that-fly-to-dusseldorf-international-airport.html)

The LCC's like i.e. ultra cheap Ryanair fly from Düsseldorf Weeze Airport NRN thru all of Europe (http://www.ryanair.com/en/cheap-flight-destinations)

If these options don't work out for ya, there's also Eurolines (http://www.eurolines.com/) - they're a very good option if flights are getting too expensive to consider - July being high season also for European vacationers.

Hope this info is helpful :)

OT I'm afraid, but alas ....
Ryanair has a promo currently for flights throughout Europe during the month of JuLy for €15.99 o/w - has to be booked by 5/27 tho.
They fly from NRN (Düsseldorf Weeze) as stated in #36

DL fare has been gone for a while, *A fares still there. Am finding some availability on LX for $642 a/i.

NO STOPOVERS allowed, however. Not sure if the previous UA fare allowed these.
