Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles - CPH - IST - HKG. Are these connections safe?

This is my first experience with Turkish. After booking these flights I started reading some threads about flights leaving late, even from IST. I'm starting to worry. The first connection looks safe, as arrive from CPH at 22:15 and leave for HKG at 00:55. I hope this flight arrives on time; I want to try the acclaimed Turkish lounge.

The second connection looks dangerous: I arrive in HKG at 16:20 and leave for PEK on a Air China flight at 17:30.

I'd like to read your opinion about the "on time" average for the IST - HKG segment and how long should it take for me to connect from Turkish arrival to Air China departure. Do I stand a chance? How about my suitcase? Will it make it? I assume I will have my CA boarding pass in hand when I arrive, as all the flights are in one ticket and booking reference. If it helps, I will fly in J, with a supposed priority tag, which should mean a quicker transfer.

I'll appreciate any input.

TK pushed all the departures to Asia one hour back ex Istanbul as they always left Atatürk airport delayed when HKG, BKK etc had scheduled departures around 23:45.

Reason is that due to the massive amount of European flights coming in between 22:00 and 23:30 the air space was so congested that many flights arrived just 15-30 minutes before the scheduled departure to most Asian destinations. So TK held most of the longhaul flights which as a result usually took off one hour later.

Since the new departure times, flights leave IST on time as they don’t have to wait for delayed connections anymore and thus making your HKG connection perfectly fine. Even if you would in worst case touch down in HKG only 45 minutes before the next flight I would not worry at all.

Don’t forget that eastbound longhauls arrive ahead of schedule most of times anyhow.

For on-time performance of IST-HKG, you can get a general idea here: http://www.flightstats.com/go/FlightRating/flightRatingByFlight.do?id=263325057&airlineCode=TK&flightNumber=71

For the HKG connection, you should have no problem (if it is all in one booking as you say). HKG is very good with short connections and baggage connections (those which are <60 minutes). So in your case, 1h10m should be more than enough (Minimum Connection Time is 50 minutes).

Ground handling companies work very closely together - based on the connecting passenger information they receive from airlines - and if all works well there will be several ground staff at the arrival gate holding a sign with several passenger names. They will escort you through transit security and to the CA departure gate, if appropriate (only in extremely tight connections).

I wouldn't worry about it. There should be at least one CA flight at least a couple of hours after yours from HKG-PEK.
