New York City - I need a place to rent for a month

Hello everyone,
By some long story, I need to rent out a place for a month since I don't have any place to stay. At the moment I am not living in NYC nor have I been in the city for a decade but I want to stay here since it was my hometown, it's easy to get around, and I want to take some random classes (dance, martial arts, first aid, etc.). Anyway if anyone has any suggestions on where to stay for cheap, it'll be appreciated. If other city is suited for what I want to do, suggestions on that are welcomed as well. Thank you!

Craigslist.
Just make sure you don't fork money over to someone before you get to the city and have a chance to see the apartment/room, check the person out, etc. Lots of people get scammed that way.
Also, if you're just looking for a city with a decent transit system where you can take classes (and if the sentimental reason for NYC isn't that overwhelming), you can do that anywhere, and for a lot cheaper. Chicago might work - and the housing situation is way easier to deal with, and far less expensive.

Good call on craigslist. Don't know why I didn't think of that. I'll look into Chicago though I picked NYC since I would be more familiar with it. Thank you M60_to_LGA.
YMCA... clever but I don't think I could survive there for a month.

Can also try Airbnb. There's also a couch squatting website...but I forgot what the name of it is.

Living in the city is too much demanding and you can't find any place truly cheap. I think its better to stay in hoboken new jersey instead of living in the city if you have to stay for a short period as its way cheaper than the city and you can take the train to the city and its less than 30min train ride, depending on where u want to go. I saw mostly students do this to go to college.
