There is a discussion that the forum name does not match the official name of the airline it represents, which is "Emirates airline" (sic).

Name changes can be handled by CD + forum Mod. as has been the case in other recent requests for forum name alterations:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/18238206-post9.html

please send a note to the forum mods and me. If they are in agreement, I am in agreement and will make the change.

In this case though, the forum mod has expressed a preference for harakiri rather than deal with the issue. :D:p

I was wondering if there had been any progress with discussing this proposal within TalkBoard? Thanks.

Can't speak for other TB members, but reading the thread you provided a link to, there doesn't seem to really be an agreement w/ what to change it to or even an overwhelming movement to change it at all for that matter.

Cheers.

It's perfectly fine the way it is...my preference is to leave it.

Fortunately this is not a matter of preference. It is a matter of the name accurately representing the forum's subject matter.

"Emirates Airlines" does not exist. "Emirates airline" does. The name should be changed accordingly to either "Emirates airline Skywards" (sic) or "Emirates Skywards" as per my posts on the other thread.

Emirates Skywards -- I'd vote for that if it ever comes to a vote.

Thank goodness. I wasn't exactly passionate about this one, to be completely honest. :D

Why? Were you unclear as to what Emirates Airlines Skywards was about? This has got to be the most pointless waste of time I have ever seen. But that's just my opinion...

I can't remember if it was Clinton or Bill Gates or both, but this reminded me of the what IS is debate. :D :D

I definitely wasn't passionate on whether there was an extra 's', and given the folk in the linked thread couldn't agree on what to call it & really didn't seem to think it was that big a deal/needed changing...but glad it's been sorted ;)

Cheers.

No, I'm 100% with you. I was responding only because I felt it my duty to do so as a TB member. I fly mainly Delta and I couldn't care less if it's Delta Airlines or Delta Air Lines or just Delta.

It's not like this was a request for United forum to be changed to "COdbaUA", which would get a tad more input than whether Emirates had an extra 's' in the forum name (that evidently no one seemed to mind until now) ;) :p :D

Not from me it won't. I'm happy that stuff like this goes right around me. I lost enough brain cells last night as it is. :D

Sorry to be a pain, but it has been a week now without any changes.

Could you perhaps elaborate on when this change is intended to occur?

Thanks.

With all due respect.

Delegation is your friend. You don't have to tackle a mountain on your own. FT is full of those willing to help, I'm sure. But, outside of extraneous circumstances, should there really be a backlog? Doesn't the ownership provide Flyertalk with the proper support structure?

Of course that would be the "singular you", since from what I can tell no one in the forum cared two patooties about the subject until you brought it up, and from what I can tell still doesn't care.

Of course in this case the thanks should go to sandiego1k & eightblack.

The ambivalence of others should not relieve us of our duty to act to suggest corrections / improvements.

If it did, TalkBoard would not exist in the first place! :D

We owe it to the airlines of the world to represent them as accurately as possible. What may seem like a very minor issue, could be sleepless nights for a brand manager.

We owe it to the airlines of the world  Why do we owe them anything? Are those 'airlines of the world' funding this website?
We may want to do it for our own reasons but I do not see us as owing airlines anything here.

If an Emirates brand manager had a problem w/ there being an extra 's' in the forum title, I'm sure s/he would have contacted either IB or the Community Director to discuss such a concern, which as far as I know did not occur.

My guess is Emirates is more focussed on there actually being a forum than the 's' issue ;) :p :D

And I have total faith in my fellow FTers that they'd find the forum whether it was listed as Emirates Airlines Skywards or Emirates Airline Skywards or Emirates. @:-)

Anyway, the change has been made & it's time to move on.

Cheers.

Funding.... hmmm, I do see things like the weekly TalkMail emails etc being "sponsored" by airlines these days. IIRC, the most recent one from a couple of days ago was sponsored by ANA...

It shows a certain level of respect. Airlines put a lot of money into their branding, and it really isn't much work to fix. Though, this thread has of course made it clear that changing a single word on Flyertalk really *is* a lot of work.

I'd hate to get the Talkboard involved in changing any light bulbs.

With all due respect, responses like this are why the Talkboard is so often mocked. Someone asked a simply valid question, and instead of saying "yeah, you are right, we'll change it", we get responses mocking the question and making it pretty clear that you don't give a damn.

Quoting you:

"Of course that would be the "singular you", since from what I can tell no one in the forum cared two patooties about the subject until you brought it up, and from what I can tell still doesn't care. "

I find that response extremely disappointing, and just another reason why the Talkboard does not get (or earn) much respect.

Showing some respect to the OP is just as important as showing respect for the airline. If someone misspelled the name of one of your clients, I'm sure you'd kindly ask them to fix it - and wouldn't expect a three week process and people saying to you that they don't "care two patooties".

It is also important for the board as SEO relies heavily on correct spelling. This may not have been as important in this case, but in others it could have created a situation where a competing board gets indexed higher than Flyertalk. People do search the Internet for these things, and correct spelling helps them find what they need.

Some folk like to say TB gets mocked or doesn't get respect, yet I rarely hear that from FTers & that was true long before I served on TB.

I have respect for 747. We've not always agreed on things, but that doesn't mean I don't respect him. And if he has a problem w/ what I said or anything I say, he knows he can PM me re: it. He has in the past; I don't expect him to suddenly get shy now :D

In the thread that 747 linked to, even the regulars of the forum didn't think the additional 's' was a big deal (or, as I phrased it, gave two patooties). If anything, the lack of caring by the forum regulars themselves in that thread & lack of input in this one would have meant TB probably wouldn't have made the request a motion. And AFAIK, Emirates itself hadn't made any complaints. So yes, speaking only for myself, this was a bit of much ado about nothing.

IMO, given the forum title change was a 'single letter' vs. a larger change, this could & should have been handled w/ a simple request to the mod of the forum and Community Director.

Given the change has been made, it's time to move on. Or again, speaking only for myself, I intend to do so. There's another forum called UA that could use a name change to something like "COdbaUA" :p :D

Cheers.
