Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - Quick discount code question

OK, I know I can call the MVP line about this, but what fun is that?
I'm an AS MVP, Mrs. Beck is not. Is it possible for us to use a discount code (99 buck companion ticket) to buy Full Flex tix and then upgrade to F? In other words, do we both need to be MVPs to make this happen?
Discuss.
Thanks.

As an MVP, you are entitled to a complimentary upgrade for yourself only. The companion fare only changes the amount you pay for the 2nd ticket, not anyone else's upgrade eligibility. Note that when purchasing a companion ticket, both travelers must be ticketed in the same cabin, and the PNR may not be split to allow one passenger to upgrade at a time.
The best solution here is probably to buy one full fare F ticket for yourself, and use the companion fare to pay only $99 for the companion. The difference full Full Flex Y to F should be pretty minor, and you won't pay anything additional for your companion. Both of you will then have confirmed seats in F, be eligible for BR access on the day of travel, and earn a 50% class of service bonus.

Unless someone goes on a ton of MR's to achieve MVPG- you'd have to pay for F. And as mentioned above, you'd get a 50% bonus on miles and EQM's, plus Boardroom access ^

Thanks for your responses - clear and detailed.
Yeah, in the past we've always used our companion ticket discount codes for F. We get two of these codes a year, and a few years back we actually bought the slightly cheaper Full Flex seats and got the upgrade, but we were both MVPs at the time. And yeah, in that case, we didn't have access to the Boardroom at SEA, which was disappointing.
