I'd like to take advantage of the offer I got in the mail for the platinum card but I also don't want to get hit with a $450 fee next year if I don't fully utilize the card features. Does anyone know if I can downgrade within a year to Gold Premier? I'm fine with paying the $175 for the Gold Premier at that point

Take the offer, pay the $450, use the $200 refund option to get AA gift cards for 2012 and when jan 2013 do it again for $200. You pay $50 for your first year and then feb of 2013 downgrade to PRG.

What do you mean by the $200 refund option? I know you can register an airline for $200 fee reimbursements. Is that what you're referring to?

I know if you pick AA as your refund option buy AA $50 or $100 gift cards it will refund you of those costs. You can then resell those gift cards maybe not a full face value but still will cut ur cost of membership.

Note that this is by no means an assured strategy anymore.
