I am posting this very expensive lesson I learned as I reminder of what can happen if you let your guard down.
I went through Polish customs yesterday for a currency declaration. The man counted out my Zloty in a room together with me - I watched him count, but obviously not carefully enough - he managed to remove 2000 zl without my noticing.
There is no question of a mistake - the correct amount of zl is noted on the form, and there is no way for me to have "misplaced" those 2,000 zl. The money was with me at all times. Unfortunately, I have no recourse (as well as myself to blame), as I was in a hurry to catch my flight and signed that I had checked my money (after all, it was counted out in front of me....)
SO at a cost of 2,000 zl I have learned never again leave a customs inspection without recounting, slowly, in front of them.
Hope this does serve as a reminder to others as well.
