Has anyone else noticed what appears to be a little typo in the name of this forum for Emirates? Isn't the airline's full name Emirates Airline, rather than Emirates Airlines? ;)
Emirates Skywards - Wrong name for airline?View Full Version : Wrong name for airline? I think it should be Emirates Airline - Skywards. I will go and administer a damn good thrashing to whoever made the mistake. EK029 May 13, 12, 11:42 pm I suppose you are right. OK I'll stop now  B747-437B May 14, 12, 2:21 am Isn't 'Airlines' the more typical usage, as in - American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Airlines, etc.. Not to be pedantic, but it is Delta Air Lines, not Delta Airlines. They are VERY picky about that. Face81 May 14, 12, 2:26 am Yes, not to be confused with the Emirates Air Line in London ;) ft101 May 14, 12, 2:37 am You would think. But it is actually EMIRATES AIRLINE... (no S) Are you sure? I thought it was just "Emirates". Part of The Emirates Group but the airline has just the one word name. eightblack May 14, 12, 2:43 am Are you sure? I thought it was just "Emirates". Part of The Emirates Group but the airline has just the one word name. Am pretty sure. Most of us - including the airline and the press, simply just refer to the airline as "Emirates" But technically speaking, and when the Emirates Group want to refer to the airline (as opposed to Dnata etc) they use Emirates airline. This extract from the Annual Report: Emirates airline announced a net profit of US$225 million (AED 827 million), for the first six months of its current financial year ending 30th September 2011. ft101 May 14, 12, 3:21 am Emirates airline announced a net profit of US$225 million (AED 827 million), for the first six months of its current financial year ending 30th September 2011. Lower case "a" in airline makes me think this is just for clarity and most of the report uses the single word "Emirates". This wikipedia entry also indicates the Company Name to be the one word version (I know it's Wikipedia but sources are quoted): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_companies_of_the_United_Arab_Emirates Circumknowitall May 14, 12, 3:30 am This thread is Flyertalk at its best ! :D :D :D eightblack May 14, 12, 3:32 am Ok, I'm losing the will to live now and am going to stick my head in the oven. You fellas call it what you want...;) B747-437B May 14, 12, 4:13 am "Emirates airline" (sic) is the correct name. The lower case "a" is intentional (why, I don't know) but is used in all public materials related to the airline. It should also be noted that Skywards is not directly affiliated with Emirates airline, but rather is a separate operating division within the Emirates Group (http://www.emirates.com/gh/English/about/emirates.aspx). Therefore, IMHO, the forum name should be "Emirates airline (Skywards)". B747-437B May 14, 12, 4:30 am I have started a thread about this in the TalkBoard forum. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/talkboard-topics/1346011-suggestion-change-name-emirates-airlines-skywards-forum.html mrtdxb May 14, 12, 5:20 am Ok, I'm losing the will to live now and am going to stick my head in the oven. You fellas call it what you want...;) Move over and make room for me too please ... B747-437B May 14, 12, 5:37 am I think the Ambassadors for this forum should also be called "Ambassador : Emirates airline" (sic). Or maybe "Marhaba"? father_ted May 14, 12, 6:22 am Okay, I'll bite. The forum should be called "Emirates Skywards". This is not only how the Emirates Group name and brand Skywards, it refers to the name of the airline that is in common use (in most of the world: some copy in the USA uses the word 'airline'). It is unlikely to be confused with the United Arab Emirates. An example from elsewhere on FT: "United MileagePlus" - the airline is actually United Air Lines, Inc., a subsidiary of United Continental Holdings. Whether the organisation selling scheduled air travel styles itself an Airline, airline or Air Line is not relevant to discussion of its FFP. Other examples: "Delta Skymiles", "Continental OnePass", "Alitalia MilleMiglia" (some may argue that forum should be called "Alitalia — Compagnia Aerea Italiana S.p.A. MilleMiglia"... but I disagree!). At least this forum has a catchier title than "Etihad Airways Etihad Guest"... oliver2002 May 14, 12, 6:51 am FT's Miles&Points > Airline Programs section is theoretically organised by FFPs, so the c:rolleyes:rrect title should be 'Skywards' similar to Flying blue and Miles & More... but then are you prepared to fall down by an umpteen number of cm/in/mm to land between SAS and Singapore on this list: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/airline-programs-374/ :eek: Firemansam May 14, 12, 7:45 am wow must be a boring day to get all this nuff nuff over one letter in a title?? Circumknowitall May 14, 12, 8:23 am Thread nominated for inclusion in the next TalkMail :D SFO777 May 14, 12, 8:26 am Ok, I'm losing the will to live now and am going to stick my head in the oven. You fellas call it what you want...;) ROFLMAO. ^ B747-437B May 14, 12, 9:50 am I have done some more research. "Emirates" (what is now the Emirates Group) was established by Emiri Decree No.2 in 1985. It is the only actual legal entity that exists. Emirates airline (sic) is simply an operating division of the Emirates Group, on a similar footing to Skywards, or SkyCargo, or Emirates Flight Catering, or DNATA or other divisions. Skywards therefore has no relationship with Emirates airline (sic) other than common parentage of the Emirates Group (aka "Emirates"). Therefore, I would suggest that "Emirates Skywards" would be the most appropriate title for the forum. This would represent Skywards correctly as an operating division of the Emirates Group (aka "Emirates"). Under any circumstances though, "Emirates Airlines Skywards" should not continue to be used. "Emirates Airlines" does not exist, neither as a legal nor artificial entity. "Emirates airline" (sic) would be the closest approximation, but Emirates airline (sic) is a separate operating division than Skywards. oliver2002 May 14, 12, 10:29 am What I find most hillarious is this logo: https://www.skywards.com/Images/logo_lockup.gif EK029 May 15, 12, 7:21 am What I find most hillarious is this logo: https://www.skywards.com/Images/logo_lockup.gif Umm...you might have to explain the hilarity  oliver2002 May 15, 12, 11:20 am EK/Skywards... why the '/' is it EK or Skywards? That's precisely what I cognitively reason as soon as I see that logo. I immediately understand it's a subsidiary of Emirates. Even further, I understand that to access the website, I would probably have to type in emirates.com/skywards on my browser... ... Which I have, and it works! Marhaba not a bad idea! I don't understand your use of *sic* however as it seems an original quote rather than a transcribed quote. This would also apply to a previous use of *sic* in an earlier post but for different reasons. Unless, of course, it is a more modern use of the word sic! EK029 Jul 19, 12, 3:47 pm I see the forum name has changed. Thanking you good sirs. |
