He has always been pretty good at getting the headlines with little or nothing to back him up. Remember Al Capone's famous vault? There will be change, but if history repeats itself, it will be window dressing at best. Fire some administrators, revamp some internal policy they'll continue to ignore, but when it comes down to it the same lobbyists, consultants and equipment contractors will still run the roost. It seems that no matter what idiot they empower in administration, regardless of political affiliation, they still tow the same line of object oriented theater. They don't tend to attract individuals with fresh thinking or a take charge attitude--they get government's rejects. The life long bureaucrats. The sheeple of DC that will do anything or say anything just to hold onto their job. Most have nowhere else to go after TSA or DHS. This is evidenced just with how long it took this administration to find Napolitano for the job. True tipping points are exceedingly rare in human history. You could probably rattle off a dozen off the top of your head - which would prove my point, since in all of human history, billions upon billions of people, thousands of different civilizations, tribes, and nations, true tipping points are so rare that they are remembered. Change is usually very gradual, so much so that most people don't realize it. They wake up one day and realize that things aren't the way they used to be, and think it's a tipping point, but it's not - it's just the point where they first noticed the change. I don't expect a tipping point on the overreach and abuse by TSA. Real pushback against governmental opression won't happen until the oppression gets very ugly and hits home to all Americans. When DHS starts implementing NoS and enhanced pat-downs and chat-downs at shopping malls and public libraries, when your name is run through government watch lists every time you make a purchase at a store, when checkpoints are set up on all interstates at every state line, and smaller roads that cross the state lines are closed entirely - that's when you'll see real pushback. And none of that will happen overnight. DillMan May 12, 12, 7:26 am Ummmm, what did he mean by "the tighter I got"? Was this a cavity search? :) chucko May 12, 12, 10:15 am Geraldo, an American Victim. Is there another form of rape? Didn't he tell them he was headed back to hallowed ground? Fredd May 12, 12, 10:30 am True tipping points are exceedingly rare in human history... ...I don't expect a tipping point on the overreach and abuse by TSA. Real pushback against governmental opression won't happen until the oppression gets very ugly and hits home to all Americans... Well written, even eloquent, and probably depressingly accurate. ^ :( Although I never got around to reading The Tipping Point (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tipping_Point_%28book%29), the author apparently cites the rise and fall of Hush Puppies shoes in the 90s as one, which wouldn't align with your more stringent definition. ;) What concerns me even more is doubt that the encroachment you describe will arouse people to push back. In India earlier this year we were searched when we entered our hotel, and searched every time we boarded the rapid transit system. I suspect the same can happen here, as long as it "makes us feel safer..." :( cparekh May 12, 12, 3:30 pm I live in hope of a tipping point (https://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=tipping+point&tbs=dfn:1&tbo=u&sa=X&ei=ZNKtT47LKcGmiQKU0PHiAw&sqi=2&ved=0CIIBEJEO&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=61fe8c406b329c8c&biw=840&bih=465), even if I don't think it's going to be Geraldo. While I think many on this board --- and many frequent flyers who don't come here --- agree with you, I think the biggest problem with a tipping point happening anytime soon is that rational people may not have a problem with the TSA. Most American don't fly very much, if ever. To them, the TSA works to keep terrorists out the sky, and the "manual rapes" do not directly affect them. The result is that even if they don't agree, they certainly don't bother to disagree. Where I think many Americans will pay attention is if they have a true understanding of the staggering amount of money the TSA is spending for what should cost much, much less. The TSA, however, pushes the incorrect idea that we should not consider budgets when spending for air safety. Of course this is not true (every passenger doesn't have a five-point seat belt and a helmet), but TSA works hard to make voters agree with them. I think most of Fox news is pure junk, but if they can advertise the idea that the TSA is spending far too much for far too little, then maybe there is change. mikeef May 14, 12, 2:38 pm There will be change, but if history repeats itself, it will be window dressing at best. That's definitely a "best case" scenario. If this agency's history does repeat itself, any change will only make things worse for passengers. Mike |
