What are some medium-priced restaurants, specifically French, Italian, Spanish, or seafood (no fusion) in the St. Germain area?
Sorry, I forgot to mention that I am referring to Paris, but I hope that was clear anyway.

when in france, eat french(italy, eat italian, spain, eat spanish). there are a huge number of middle restaurants that cater to families(not too formal) and those not in high dress in the 6th. few are mentioned is guide books, as they are not special "go to" restaurants. we find them to be most attractive.

There are a number of very reasonably priced French bistros on rue Guisarde, which is the street at the end of rue Princesse. I have been to La Boussole a number of times.

Some suggestions:
- Le Chardenoux des Près: in a vintage atmosphere, excellent bistronomique food run by Cyril Lignac, and served by smiling/professional staff. Elegant still laid back atmosphere. RSVP (Amex Fine Dining)
- Le Petit Vatel: one of smallest - still more than decent - restaurants in Paris. Do not expect grande cuisine but home made cooking in a very friendly atmosphere
- KGB - Kitchen Galerie Bis : yes it is fusion cuisine, but you cannot miss it: very good and cheaper than the original restaurant
- Le Comptoir du Relais: when grand chef Yves Camdeborde runs a great bistronomique. RSVP
- L'Agapé substance: contemporary bistro using herbs and rare vegetable. The most recent revelation in the area
- Fish Boissonnerie : great food, great wine in English speaking atmosphere (the restaurant is run by New Zealand team)
- Armani Caffé: surprisingly excellent Italian food (not so surprising when you know that chef is Massimo Mori). Very friendly staff, and I love their ice-cream à la turbine

Another Italian choice: Le Cherche Midi
A Trattoria where I had dinner with an Italian friend (she said: this is where the Agnellis have dinner when in Paris...).
Warm atmosphere, good food in the Italian tradition of trattoria (excellent fresh products, simple dishes).

Villa Médicis, rue Saint Placide
An excellent pizzeria.
I have been invited for lunch by a member of staff of Prime Minister (and was first surprised by the choice).
But at lunch time, it is the canteen of most diplomats in Paris.
Very funny atmosphere to see elegant clientele in a kistch decor.

Best restaurant in the 6th, IMHO is l'Epigramme, 9 rue de l'Eperon. My birthday dinner was there in December!

I haven't looked for it in a long time, but for many years, a popular cheap place for students and locals was something like Cafe des Beaux Arts (traditional French) on the corner of rue des Beaux Arts. There are a couple "formula" steak chains very close to St Germain des Pres that are reliable. Another one that I like, if it still exists, is Rotisserie d'en Face (simple grilled meats and other things, in French style), a medium-priced outpost of Restaurant Jacques Cagna, a Michelin-starred place in an old house around the corner.

there are also a number of nice places to eat on the islands. they mainly cater to lunch crowd, so tables are usually pretty easy to find.

Some are tourist ripoffs.

which ones? the one with menus also in english and russian? i intensely dislike the use of the word ripoff. how often do you use it. could you name a few names, maybe a list? i have woned biz that were refered to as ripoffs. that was because someone was cheaper. we were better, and honored our warrattee, but there were twits out there that claimed an honest job for an honest price was a "ripoff"
now which places on the islands are ripoff restaurants?

I was totally unimpressed; service was aloof, food was so-so, decor limited but high prices.
Did I miss something? many people recommended it.

No, you did not miss anything.;)
Lipp, like the Café de Flore just opposite, are terrible places for food.
Service is hit or miss (and if you are a tourist, it may be miss or miss...).
Just go there for the atmosphere and have a coffee.
If you want to have a good lunch/dinner, go definitely elsewhere!

Thanks for the suggestions, I usually aim for any middle class low-medium priced restaurants where one can get a typical lunch or dinner (preferably prix fixe) for approximately the total around €20-25 a person and only occasionally €25 or higher. I refer to fairly inexpensive restaurants that serves traditional French, especially where middle class or working class locals eat.

I'm actually wondering about restaurants in the 5th, and hoping that all you experts on the 6th can help me out. Looking for inexpensive-moderate restuarants near the Hotel Claude Bernard St. Germain, which is on Rue des Ecoles. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

in the first place, Hotel Claude Bernard St. Germain is a couple hundred meters from the 6th. even i can walk that far. we had found the restaurants in the 5 the to be a bit disappointing, either expensive or very crowded.

Thanks so much. I had no idea how close the hotel is to the 6th, so your post is very helpful. My sibling will be there so I will pass the link to this thread on.

I second Le Comptoir du Relaix. As reservations are extremely hard to come by, Walk into their adjoining hotel and ask for a cancellation. That is for the evening chef's choice Prix Fix. He closes at night and serves a 5 course meal for approx 55 euro!!I have been able to get one on my last 2 trips to Paris, albeit on Mon,Tues.I also like Le Cinq Mars on Rue de Vernueil, I think it is in the 7th off Rue du Bac. Small neighborhood restaurant. Also Jaques Cagna's rotisserie around the corner from his restaurant (also excellent however expensive as I believe it is a 2*)
