Work trip... couple nights in each city.

I've been to CPH before and always staed at the SAS Royal Hotel (now the Radisson Blu Royal).

I usually stay Starwood (SPG Platinum) but no Starwoods in either city.

Need good internet access in the hotel, central location is nice, and want it to be a nice hotel. Not super price sensitive.

Tripadvisor wasn't really clear on what's the "best hotel".

Don't know anyhing about Oslo.

Any suggetsions?

For CPH thinking of the Royal or the Marriott

For me, the best hotels in Nordic countries are the local hotels. I've been staying at First Hotel in Vesterbro and recommend it: free Internet, free breakfast, comfortable bed, very Scandinavian, reasonably priced. I used to see SQ crew at the hotel and can now say that I've slept with Singapore Girls--figuratively.

I've also stayed at the Marriott when it opened in late 2001; if you want to stay in a familiar environment (no surprises), then Marriott it is. But it's quite a hike to town and, because it is located behind the central train station, the squeeking noises from the railroad (especially when trains slow down and turn towards the station) can be annoying. Besides the hotel's own restaurant, the nearest one (very good actually) is next door inside The Black Diamond, Copenhagen's main library.

I'm a fan of the Scandic Front in Copenhagen - nice near-waterfront location at the back of Nyhavn, very professionally run, wifi good enough for Video Skype and nice, modern rooms (even if the singles can be a little small).

In Oslo, I used to end up at the Radisson Blu Plaza behind the station sometimes, but never warmed to it, nor the Christiania opposite. My favourite there ended up being the Gabelshus - a little west of the centre, but a really warm, friendly place, near the tram line, which laid on a decent buffet too. If I needed a pure business hotel, though, I'd probably go for the Plaza.

Thanks. I'm leaning towards the former "SAS Royal" in CPH and the First Hotel Grims Grenska in Oslo

I like the Hilton. With the Metro the location at the airport is not an issue. I don't go to CPH as a tourist, however. I also don't like the location of the Royal on the "wrong" side of town -- Vesterbro and the main rail station. The rooms are very small too. If you want Arne Jacobsen furniture you get plenty of that in the Hilton.

The top hotel by a mile will be the D'Angleterre when it reopens.

"Local" hotels in Denmark are shiiitty by any measure, especially what you pay for them.

I have never stayed at Grims Grenka, but walked past it many times. Reports/ reviews in Norwegian newspapers suggest that it is not really worth the hype. The area is not too good. The southern part of downtown is not really the best part to stay. It is not the worst part of Kvadraturen (the old city centre with "American style" street layout from the 17th Century) for prostitutes, but they certainly prowl there as well. I would probably go for Hotel Bristol. The area there is very busy for night life, but safe. And the hotel is an old-fashioned historical hotel. Somewhat worn, but oozes charm

In Oslo, the Grand and the Continental are usually considered to be the top central hotels, but they can get noisy on a weekend if you have a room facing the street.

The Thief recently opened by the harbor and they bill themselves as a 5-star hotel, but I haven't heard any reports about it. The location is nice, but it's about 10-minute walk along the harbor to the center.

The Thon Opera has very comfortable rooms and the best breakfast that I've had at an Oslo Hotel (I've stayed at most of them). It's right next to the train station which is convenient for travel but is not the nicest part of town due to the nearby construction.

The Raddison Scandanivia has a nice location by a park but is only a couple of blocks to the center of town.

In Copenhagen, the Marriot has nice rooms, comfortable beds and a great breakfast. It's on the water, but it's about a 10-minute walk until you get to an area with good restaurants and bars. Until the D'angleterre reopens it's probably the top hotel.

I disagree with the previous comment about the First Hotel in Vesterbro. I found it to be a poorly run hotel, very understaffed and the plumbing is bad in a lot of the rooms.
