I have a question about using my miles for an upgrade, but that info may already be written somewhere here in a thread for newbies to get oriented.

Does such a thing exist for the Krisflyer forum?

Welcome to flyertalk sakoide. There's no Newbie Lounge on SQ.

I would recommend a search of the Krisflyer forum first regarding your specific upgrade question.

Also have a look in SQ FAQ v2.

If unable to find an answer then post your question detailing what you are after.

Welcome to FT, Sakoide! ^

I guess the most important question is do you already have your flights booked? If not... GOOD. :) One of the main conditions is that you need to book a "Flexy" fare in order to use miles for an upgrade.

Secondly, there need to be upgrades available, and from what I know the best way is to check if a regular flight award in that category is available for a given flight. If yes, then an upgrade should be too. So only book a "flexy" rare, and only on a flight where you see availability of an award flight in the higher class of travel that you choose.

Just for further information - I did the above, checked that a full redemption booking was available and then bought the flexy fare and tried to upgrade myself but lo and behold, the saver award wasn't available (only a full award was available)!

However, I just kept checking it the next few days and it reappeared a few days later and I managed to upgrade the ticket. The next week, same thing happened to me on booking a flight for a family member who wanted to be on the same flight as me, but it appeared a day later in that case.

Also, you can call up SQ to upgrade the class of your ticket should you already have it issued to one that can be upgraded (with the loss of the 15% discount presumable).

Yes, if the agent touches your booking, you lose the 15% discount. However, with all the problems with their website, SQ agents in Singapore (not ICC!!!) are known to be a bit more flexible about not taking away your 15% discount, but YMMV!

By the way, if you go throught the PPS/Krisflyer prompt on the SQ number in Singapore, you are guaranteed to get through to the Singapore agents. Go the other way, and you will end up with the India Call Centre (ICC) and the professionalism, quality of service, and agent empowerment all suffer, IMHO.
