Travel + Leisure: World's Most-Visited Ancient Ruins (http://www.travelandleisure.com/articles/worlds-most-visited-ancient-ruins)
The list includes...
- Great Wall of China
- Colosseum, Rome
- The Forum, Rome
- Terracotta Army, China
- Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
- Pompeii, Italy
- Roman Baths, Bath, UK
And many more!
:)
Angkor Wat is still used for worship and hence doesn't meet the criteria
Other parts of the Angkor complex would qualify though

My travel has been mostly Eurocentric, so the following applies only to those ruins,
I loved Ephesus!

As much as I appreciate Roma as a really great city, both of the places mentioned here:
- Colosseum, Rome
- The Forum, Rome
are far too crowded with tourists.
Go to a vist in Verona if you want to visit an arena which is not damaged, and Pompei for everything else.

Not really that shocking when they're #2 and 3 on the list of Most-Visited sites. :p
fwiw, Pompei was more crowded than either when I visited.

Surprised not to see Chichen Itza on the list, even with the tourism slump in Mexico.
Cambodia simply doesn't have enough infrastructure for the Angkor ruins to get much higher than 20th.
Oops, I see that Chichen Itza did make the list (at 11th), just not the OP's abbreviated version of it.
Several places I'm really surprised not to see would be the giant Buddah at Nara - although that is also still a worship site, and well enough maintained not to be a ruin, it is over 1250 years old, and Prambanan and Borobudur near Yogyakarta, which are certainly world class ruins.

Surprised not to see Chichen Itza on the list, even with the tourism slump in Mexico.I always called it “Itza Chicken.”
Meanwhile — while certainly not the most visited — I have visited what are purportedly the oldest free-standing structures in the world in Malta (www.flyertalk.com/forum/trip-reports/182428-france-via-concorde-malta-southern-italy-post1673587.html#post1673587).

Perhaps off topic, but I think I should mention that Cholula and I are in competition for the title of "World's Most-Traveled Ancient Ruin".
