Hi there,
I'm a plat and I've booked the fam (me, the mrs and the 10 yo) into the Marriott East Side in July. Reading posts makes me think that I'm making a mistake and should've chosen another property. I'd like a location that has a decent concierge lounge for breakfast and a room big enough for 3. A fun neighborhood would be nice as well...I've stayed in the Downtown location and it is a bit far from most things to do with a 10 yo with the exception of the WTC memorial, SI ferry and statue of liberty.

My question is if the Marquis is the way to go or if we ought to look at the Carlton, Algonquin or any of the Rens. Any advice would be appreciated as they all have availability now.
TIA,
Mike

I would do the Marquis with a 10 year old. Nothing like Times Square.

We went Marriott hotel hopping to qualify for a megabonus a couple of summers ago. One of my kids was ten at the time. We tried out the Marriott Downtown, Marriott East Side and Marriott Marquis. For the kids, the Marquis definitely won out. Do note that the lounges aren't open on the weekends (although the Marriott Downtown comped us breakfast).

Thanks for the advice...have any of you stayed in the Renaissance, Carlton or Algonquin (sp?) properties with kids?

I've stayed in the Renaissance when my kids were about your son's age. Absolutely flat and nothing there to excite a 10 yr old (but we are from NY so Times Square is not a novelty to my kids). The Renaissance room views are not great and the hotel is boring for a kid.

The Marriott Marquis and it's glass elevators and huge atrium will be more exciting than the Renaissance, and the location is better for a youngster than the Marriott East Side.

Have fun!

a 10 year old kid would have more fun at a camping trip playing with fire. I know I would at that age. A kid would have no interest in the activities you mentioned.

You will get a nice room upgrade as Plat. At Marquis, somehow the corner room is much bigger than junior suite. Stay away from the restaurants at Marquis. All very crappy. I like the restaurant at Renaissance 57.

This cracks me up as I went camping with my ten year old's Girl Scout troop last weekend and they must have asked me when we could light the camp fire 50 times on Saturday starting at about 10 am. Way better than the WTC memorial. Heck, she wasn't even born then.
