Travel Technology - Free US Phone Numbers for International Forwarding

Callcentric is giving away free New York phone numbers. They charge a $1.50 a month 911 fee, but you can avoid that by checking the box saying that you will use the number solely outside the US.

If you buy some PAYG minutes from them, you can use it for international call forwarding. You can also use the number as a free eFax type number.

Thanks for this - something for free which is actually free. :) A choice of 5 area codes, too, including one which includes Manhattan for those who don't know their NYC boroughs too well.

I signed up without the 911 feature. For occasional use, it's great. I've set it up to redirect to my UK number for about 2 cents per call, much better than using the +1 number on my international SIM card.

Why bother with this when Google Voice works for free?

For true VoIP use, an incoming number (DID) can be pretty useful. In fact, this would be great to use as one of your numbers in Google Voice, so you can receive GV calls on a SIP phone ;). You could also forward this DID to an international number as a poster above has done, something GV doesn't allow.

Google Voice does not forward calls internationally.

I'm not sure GV will be free forever. @:-)

In 4 1 Manhattan number.

Can I port my Illinois residential number to CC on a free account?

It's per minute, but, more importantly, what SIM are you using that has a UK number that bills at a cheap landline rate?

I presume he meant a UK landline.

Yeah. That has to be a UK landline.

I just cancelled a kall8 number that I've had for a decade. It was only $2/month, but I just don't do as much Int'l forwarding as I used to.

The T&C of Callcentric say that they reserve the right to cancel a number with no charges for 3 months, which is a bit short for me. It's not unusual for me to go longer than that with no incoming forwarded calls. Does Callcentric really cancel numbers this quickly?

You can use Callcentric's number as an EFax number as well. Leave it set as one when you are back int he states. Inbound calls are free and you'll find uses for it on the road. That should keep you within your usage limits. Alternatively, enable the calling card function and use it for an international call or two. Their international rates are pretty good.

It's per minute ...Yes, $0.198 per minute. I tested it and was charged 2 cents for a short call.... but, more importantly, what SIM are you using that has a UK number that bills at a cheap landline rate?Did I say that? I don't think so.

As set up, CallCentric redirects to my UK landline for about 2 cents a minute. My comment comparing cost with my international SIM card was simply that this option is cheaper than redirecting from the +1 number on my international SIM.
