Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan - What else can I do with my miles? Sell?
May 7, 12, 7:44 pm
Hi all. I have about 55000 miles. I am not enjoying how dfficult I am finding it to find flights I like. I live in Victoria BC and am hoping to go to Maui next March. There is nothing that works for me. The one flight I saw thatwent from vic-seattle-maui was 75000, which is ridiculous. I have already cancelled my creditcard and simply got a cash back one as I and disappointed in what I am being offered. Is there anything else can do with my points other than flights? Can I sell them? Offer someone discounted airfare and book the ticket for them? Your expertise is greatly appreciated for this frustrated customer :)

Welcome to FlyerTalk.
Mileage Plan Terms & Conditions
Alaska Airlines award tickets or Miles may not be sold, purchased or bartered except as permitted on Points.com. Mileage or tickets are void if transferred for cash or other consideration, except for valid Mileage Plan Buy Miles, Gift Miles or Transfer Miles transactions processed through Points.com. Such actions shall be considered acts of fraud against Alaska Airlines. Alaska Airlines urges members to avoid purchasing or transferring Mileage Plan Miles through third parties other than Points.com. The member and/or the traveler shall be liable for the full, unrestricted value of awards issued as a result of improper or fraudulent transfers or otherwise in violation of these Conditions of Membership. Alaska Airlines reserves the right to deactivate the Mileage Plan account, and/or remove the Miles from the account of any member who violates these terms until liability is fulfilled.
I would look for other ways and other places to travel. This forum has a lot of information for you (you might try the Newbie Lounge thread stickied at the top of this forum). If nothing else, your miles can be used for up to $200 off of the value of a ticket.
I have lots of miles and haven't been able to use them to Hawaii during prime time. You will probably also have problems getting to Hawaii on other airlines as well. I have used my miles to go to Hong Kong, South Africa, Mexico, Key West, Alaska, Paris and Rome.
Part of the issue may be where you are...as YYJ-SEA capacity is limited, and availablity is necessary for the entire itinerary. If it's worth it to you, you may want to check into getting to SEA in an alternative fashion (Clipper?) and then redeem from SEA, which is bound to be much easier than YYJ.

There's tons of BLI-HNL availability in March in coach (just checked now)- ferry to the mainland, then bus/train to BLI. A second round-trip ticket to OGG on HA would be 10K US/UA/AA miles (which would be really, really easy to pick up without breaking much of a sweat by renting cars/hotel rooms and doing some cheap promos, you can use AA's calendar at aa.com to check availability).
OP, I suspect you're finding out that holding a fistful of miles do not guarantee 100% availability of any plane route you want 100% of the time. But where there's a will there's a way, and FT and it's friendly denizens are here to help you find that way.
You should check all possible combinations. For several years I have taken multiple trips YYJ/SEA/MCO and each time I have to go through multiple calculations to get there - and back - with the best use of miles and cash. And it will likely take some cash (the penalty for living on this rock).
I'm thinking that you will probably end up SEA to HNL? with miles (47.5K?) (not sure, I've never been to Hawaii) and if you have another 10,000 miles you can do miles and money from YYJ to SEA (return) for about as much (if you take into account the hassle) as doing the ferry and getting to BLI hassle (and which you will know is not as easy as eponymous_coward made it out to be) or taking the Clipper to and from SEA. Unfortunately, I think you cancelled your cc just shy of the number of miles that you really need.
(They put the 20K money and miles details first, so be sure to go to the bottom of the awards to see the 10K awards.) Also, if you do book a ticket with money and miles, remember that the money portion is also eligible for the low fare guarantee - so be sure to check at least weekly - I gained many $$ of credits for other flights by doing this.
For me, usually (not always) booking the YYJ/SEA - return - as a money and miles and the SEA/MCO portion with miles worked best. However, at other times, other things have worked - you really have to just sit and do the math. HTH
ETA: I just checked and I am looking at the Award calendar and showing lots of YYJ to HNL awards for March 2013 at 20K each way - for a total of 40K + $62.60 cash. (There are also similar awards - but not as many - for YYJ to OGG for the same 40K + 62.60 cash). As I mentioned above, you should check each combination as there are some weird - and surprising - combinations to get off this rock.
