India - Gift for exchange student going to India
A high school soon to be graduate is going to India for a year via Rotary. I was thinking of trying to get him a gift relating to the upcoming trip. He will be about 100 miles southeast of Mumbai. I don't know much about traveling to or around India. Any suggestions or should I just give him some cash?

How much do you want to spend on the gift? What are the student's general interests?
How about a nice camera to help him record his memories?
Sorry, I forgot to set a budget. I'd like to spend roughly $50 or so. I don't know him very well but he is the older brother of my daughter's friend.
Is electricity still pretty sporadic? Would a solar charger for ipods etc be useful?

When travelling abroad, having a cell phone that functions abroad is a must. One can't get a multiband mobile phone for under $50, that would appeal to a teen.
I have suggestion that is certain to draw laughs here. It's a personal item and might not be appropriate for someone you don't know well. It's very useful though.

A neck wallet, or a wallet one can wear under a tee-shirt to keep one's valuables. His parents probably already thought of that.
If I were to do it today and did not feel comfortable with my suggestion, I would go with cash.
