Jet Airways announced that as a part of its ongoing network evaluation with a clear focus on profitability, it will be redeploying its assets on its existing route network. This has hence necessitated the temporary suspension of the airline's A330 Mumbai - Johannesburg flights effective June 12th, 2012.

Jet Airways will work closely with it’s interline partners and ensure affected guests are rebooked on alternate flights for their travel from June 12th, in order to minimize inconvenience caused.

Probably not a surprised considering that this was one of the few routes where Premiere awards were available. If awards are available, 9W probably wasn't selling the seats, knowing how kanjhoos they are with inventory.

I wonder how many rotations to BKK they will replace this flight with? Lots of trash yield tourists to fly :)

Must be another route on which EK is making a killing... goes to show the captive O&D market to many destinations is not there (yet?).

from bom to bkk, they've outpriced the market i see, where 1 Y ticket on 9w could be as much as 1.5 ticket on cx, and 1.33 tic on AI. anyways, they're trying to be profitable!

knowing how kanjhoos they are
My uncle just flew JNB-BOM and is sadly supposed to be on BOM-JNB in a week's time (have to alert him about this news). They didn't serve Coke on the flight saying that they didn't have any. No Coke, on an international flight! Plus, food was unpalatable according to him.

He said he would be flying EK and spending 4 hours in a DXB lounge than put up with 9W again. Well, he got his wish :D

In the long term, maybe. In the short term, I don't expect it...

Yeah, they pretty much are always more expensive than the competition. I have no clue how they fill their aircraft, especially since they seem to love dumping more and more capacity on the India-BKK market. Probably through consolidators...

He's willing to choose 10-abreast on a 777 over flying 9W? Wow, it must have been truly terrible...

He did say lounge... maybe the trip is in J (which makes it more do-able)...?

Well, I'd still think that herringbone is nicer than middle seat J?

Being rerouted using BA J would be nice...

Agreed. Although, if I don't get row 6 or 10 in the 9W Airbus, I'm usually not a very happy camper. :p

It's not that I'm trying to be an ..., it's more like I really need the storage space on the seat for my multitude of things that I spread out.

Service on EK might be starting to edge out 9W as of recent, though.

It was. Plus status with EK helps. 9W on that sector only made sense for him because it was a direct flight

I've always wondered how profitable such routes could have been for them. Wouldn't it just be less expensive for them to route the passengers to MXP via Brussels, connecting to SN? I know that passengers would prefer a direct routing, but I just can't see an India-Italy route making a ton of money. That's just my opinion, though.

I would have thought that the BOM-JNB route was more successful than that as well. What sort of passengers exactly occupy the DEL-MXP route?

Human passengers I think...

That's what went through my head when I saw this thread. It might be appropriate to ask this question now.

The impression one gets reading this thread is that 9W is alienating its most ardent and loyal flyers.
Its prices are higher than comparables in the markets it serves.
Service is on the decline
Award redemption is difficult.
Now this suspension.

DEL-MXP goes very packed in the back, but virtually empty in front. There are a lot of ATQ and IXC origin pax on this flight. Infact I have even heard inflight announcements in Punjabi at times as well.

Loads are high, but revenue probably might not be up to expectations. I would not be surprised to see this route canned. Or at the very least change to the 18J (or even a special all Y!) config.

Will 9W become the next IT?Nope - too much loyalty, promotions and (corporate) discounting, in addition to the loyal JP characters...

Bizarre...I would have got 1.5x PQM on United, but would have to endure in Y seat on SQ...not too bad actually.

If I do fly, I might anyway do SQ (even though I have boycotted them for over 10 years) if I don't score an upgrade on 9w...might as well get my 1K status in early!

He's willing to choose 10-abreast on a 777 over flying 9W? Wow, it must have been truly terrible...9w's Y seats are not exactly that great, and the food sucks quite badly in Y!

But I've gotten over this addiction - just want a flat bed to sleep - and I do excellently on Jet's seats! ^

The more I think about this, the more unlikely it seems. 9W has a lot of political clout which they've built up over the years - unlike IT, I don't think GoI would let 9W go under.

@PVD - I should certainly hope that they're humans... :p
