Emirates Skywards - Overnight in Dubai/visa requirement.

I know it's asked before but there seems to be a lot of confusion and frequent changes to getting a visa to enter Dubai for an overnight stay, that is is from early afternoon to the next morning.
My wife and I are travelling in J class and are both gold, so we know we can use the e-gate. This is the first time and so nothing has been activated before. We have Australian passports.
The main question is do we have to have recent extra passport type photos for the visa ??
Is it so much better than standing in the normal queue. We have never had a planned stayover before and want to make the exit as quickly (from the airport) as quickly as possible.

Get your fast track invitation cards onboard and walk straight to the F/J immigration queue, you will get a 30 day visa free of charge at the counter. No photos or docs required.

Unless you plan on frequenting the UAE quite regularly, I see no point in getting the egate activated.

Fast track at DXB is a joke, though I agree e gate doesn't make sense unless you'll visit a few times. Don't think you need extra photos or anything.
