Germany - Overnight layover at DUS

Hello all,
I have an overnight layover at DUS...arriving at 1615 and departing 910 the next day.
I could stay at an airport hotel, understood, but that seems like a waste of an opportunity.
I've spent five or so days in Dusseldorf center and parks a couple years back, so I wondered if there was another city/town/village/neighborhood that would be reasonable and interesting for a few hours (even if it's just a good beer garden) with a decent place to stay (I like family 3-star/pensions) near the S-bahn.
As an aside: I'm traveling biz class on AB...if my departure is at 910, when should I arrive?
Thanks much,

Hi Adam!

The train connection in DUS is really good. You could easily reach all the sourrounding areas. If you know Düsseldorf, you could visit cologne. The central train station is just a few hundred meters from the cathedral and the historic center. You also find a lot of hotels, although I find hotels in cologne quite expensive.

DUS is a fast airport. Normally you don't need much time for security & co.

I had an early morning departure at DUS last week and it took me about 5 minutes to get through the ticket counter and maybe another 5 minutes at security. I was the only one in Fast Track.

A few words on DUS layover hotels: I haven't tried the Maritim yet, but I've stayed at the Sheraton twice. While the breakfast buffet was really good, I found the price to be a bit high while the hotel is not particularly nice. It's alright for a one-night layover if you're arriving very late (no need to take the train to the center); however, there are two Holiday Inn hotels near the central station, one which is only a five-minute tram ride away from Düsseldorf Central (Graf-Adolf-Platz, a hotel which I can highly recommend) and one which is within walking distance from the station (but which I absolutely cannot recommend, one of the worst hotels I've ever experienced).
Both hotels are generally less expensive than the airport hotels and at least the HI Düsseldorf City Center provides much better service (while also a 4-star-superior venue like the Sheraton) at around 100 EUR per night, especially when you hold PriorityClub status.

Also underwhelmed by the DUS airport Sheraton, especially given the price.
Unless it is an unusual situation (ie the end of a huge trade show), I have to think that you really don't need to show up very early for a 9:10 flight...maybe 7:55?

Thanks for all the advice...I'd rather skip the 40-minute ride to Cologne, but I found a nice family style hotel at the s-bahn stop just north of the airport, which seems to be in a nice-ish suburb so I think I'll try that out...thanks again!

Trying to book an award flight on AA's off season discount in November. The only routing I can make work is MAD-DUS-LAX-SFO with an overnight stop at DUS, arrive 18:25 on Saturday, depart 11:00 Sunday.
Initially, I was upset I couldn't find anything more direct, but maybe this is a great opportunity.
Have never been to Germany at all. Any guides/advice on the best way to use the night? Maybe a nice (cheap) dinner and a safe neighborhood to explore on foot?

All of Düsseldorf is a safe and most of it is a nice neighborhood. Get yourself a hotel in town and enjoy Saturday evening in the old parts of the city. You will be in the heart of the party mile with hundreds of pubs, bars and restaurants - 20 minutes by public transport and 15 minutes by taxi away from the airport.

OK, I can now definitely recommend two hotels for your layover in DUS.
If you want to stay at the airport, you should choose the Maritim. Rates are roughly the same as the airport Sheraton while the hotel is much nicer than the Sheraton.
If you want to stay in town, I recommend the Holiday Inn Graf-Adolf-Platz which is conveniently located and much better than the HI near the station (while the former is only three or four tram stops away from the central station).

You two had me sold on it... but when I went back to book the flights the availability was gone...
While I was pouting about that, I received an invitation to visit the northwest coast of Spain instead. Seems like a fair trade. Maybe DUS next time...
