Apologies for not speaking 'American', but what on earth does this mean? It's on the wall next to the check-in desk at the Hilton on East 42nd St in NYC:

I have never heard of, nor come across, an "assistive device" before? There is no other context given, nor any other signs in the viscinity of this one, to give any clues as to what they are getting at...

Do a Google search. There are assistive devices for disabled, elderly, deaf, blind, children, etc. Nothing very unusual.

Understand now?

Yes, I see what you mean - just never seen the phrase before. Wasn't just me who thought it was a strange one; so did the three people I was checking in with.

I guess what they mean is "mobility aids", or similar.

I was keen to know what type of "Assistive devices" they had. Perhaps one that could do my work for me, or pack my suitcase when it's time to go home... :D

... could also mean telephones, door bells, visual alarms.

Next time you are near the front desk ask. I'm sure they will be happy to provide a list. They did post the sign...
