Russia - Wanting to start EU trip in Moscow

I am wanting to visit Europe, by making my way across Europe by train and flying back through Britain back to the states. Either in early winter or early spring. I have two airlines with the cheapest tickets, 2600rt with KLM or 2700 with Aeroflot to Sheremetyevo. It will just be me and my wife, we won't be in much of a rush. Is there much of a difference in service between these two airlines. I was hoping to visit Moscow or St. Petersburg and eventually take the train to Berlin and go from there. Are there many foreigners during this time in the city, I am not fluent in German or Russian but I know enough to get by.

SU is likely to give you a non-stop flight from the US from several cities (JFK, LAX, and (seasonally) IAD) while KLM is going to be a connection. They're both Skyteam, so you should be able to combine them both on one ticket.

You'll be able to find people who speak English in a lot of places in both St. Petersburg and Moscow. St. Pete is a little better set up for tourists in terms of maps and signs in English, due to all the cruise visitors, but Moscow is working hard to catch up. St. Petersburg has a high speed train to Helsinki, you could then go on to Berlin from there, or you can do the more traditional trains from either Moscow or St. Pete.

I am not sure going to Berlin through Helsinki by train is possible unless you use a ferry from Helsinki to Sweden or Denmark. But I can be wrong.

Train to Berlin? Why?

There is a Moscow-Berlin train though. 24h+ travel time. Helsinki-Berlin would be 27+, and yes, it includes a ferry ride.

Something different I suppose. My dad and his parents were stationed in Germany for many years and I have always wanted to spend time there.

I'm wondering why you want to take a train, not why you want to spend time in Germany

Based on my experience Aeroflot provides a good service.
KLM can send your lugguage not with you.

I would much prefer Aeroflot on the Moscow route. DCMike is correct that the train to Finland would be a good connection to Berlin. From there you can grab Germanwings or another budget airline to Germany. It would also be really cheap and easy to fly from Riga or Tallinn (each a nice city in its own right) to Berlin.

But why bother with that when MIAT (Mongolian Airlines) flies from SVO-BER? :D
