Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Programs - Separate tix, CA WEH-PEK-LAX check through?

Situation: Two persons (one revenue, one UA award), CA LAX-HKG RT, one-week PEK stopover on return. Separate ticket WEH-PEK which arrives 2.5 hours before the afternoon PEK-LAX in mid-June.

Question: Baggage amount within domestic limits. What's the chance we can check through at WEH?

Your information is confusing...or incomplete. How does LAX-HKG RT (implies HKG-LAX return) work with WEH-PEK-LAX. So which is it? Or is that primary ticket LAX-PEK-HKG-PEK-LAX?

The way I read it is: LAX-PEK-HKG-PEK-WEH-PEK-LAX

I think the luggage will be a non issue, but one always needs to have contingency plans in mind when doing this sort of thing.

Sorry I edited on you after you quoted! Or he may have open jaw LAX-PEK-HKG (open segment) PEK-LAX. With the separate WEH-PEK add-on. I'd be hopeful but have contingency plans, agreed. WEH check-in staff may be fairly inflexible and strictly operate on the domestic PNR rules.

Correct. CA has been selling LAX-HKG cheap during every low season since early 2011--cheaper than to any mainland city--with free PEK stopover. The WEH side trip thus needs to be separate tickets.

Last year I took the same PEK stopover on return. PEK handled the de facto dual identities (HRP, US passport) perfectly. As jiejie mentioned, I'm not sure WEH (or any small CA station) is proficient in handling dual docs to fly and dual tix for bags.

I've asked around and it seems if I misconnect the 2 pm PEK-LAX due to flight or bag issues, the evening flight should be able to accommodate us since mid-June isn't peak eastbound season especially with two daily flights. Am I correct?

The evening flight does sell out fairly often; it is very popular.

Mid-June you have tons of expat families heading back to USA (and via LAX to South America) following the end of the international school year. Though you could get lucky, it would be risky to assume spare TPAC seats on the next flight if you miss your originally ticketed connection. July is actually a safer gamble than June or August, but that doesn't help you.

If WEH staff will not check your bags through and you have to do pickup and recheck, you will still have plenty of time to do this if the domestic arrives on time at PEK. (Assuming it's the one scheduled for 11:35 arrival). You have a cushion for delay of about 40-45 minutes before it starts getting dicey. I think cutoff for international check-in is 60 minutes.
