Qantas Frequent Flyer - Status points not given for paid upgrade?

I purchased an upgrade at the airport (from Y to J) on QF1 from SIN to LHR.

However it looks like I've only been given the status points for the Y fare? No cabin bonus there either.

Is this a mistake or do you not accrue the full status points / cabin bonus without paying the full J fare?

If Qantas just allowed you to purchase an upgrade at the airport, then I would expect that you would receive the points for the original cabin in the same way that mileage upgrades and involuntary upgrades do

If you paid the fare difference between economy and business, then indeed you should get the business class points

As above from Dave Noble.
It does appear that QF is now offering paid upgrades, for a set fee, at some airports now but when I asked about the Trans Tasman upgrades it was made quite clear that you will retain the original fare class, original luggage allowance, but have access to the appropriate lounge.

It would be good to have these listed for different routes like the EK forums.

It'd be interesting to know how these are being offered, too.

Is there a sign on the counter - similar to when airlines ask for voluntary off-loading? Are customers being asked?

Must admit, can only be a winner for QF if they can grab $500 off a NB instead of providing an Op Up to a WP. Same result, cabin-wise, but QF gain the cash.

I'll fetch my tub of pop-corn ....

I paid SG$1200 for the upgrade which is probably less than the difference, so I guess that's what happened. If I get around to calling / emailing QF to ask I will report back. It's annoying as I'm now stranded 5 status points short of Gold...

As reported in this thread Now Paid Ugrade at WLG (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/qantas-frequent-flyer/1313663-now-paid-upgrade-wlg.html)
This was for Trans Tasmans reported at the time at the NZ originations with a sign at the Check In Desks.

A $800 vs a $3.5k fare, the difference would be more than $1200....

From only paying SGD1200 surcharge for business class, can afford a BA flight to Manchester or Amsterdam to get the remaining 5 points against the cost that business class would have been

5 points isn't hard to come by

paid at the OLCI check in desk by CC.

No luggage allowance increase, lounge access, Y status credits and points.

Called an 'Airport Upgrade'

So you were offered it at OLCI, you accepted at OLCI, and it was called an "Airport upgrade"?

How was it offered to you?

Was it offerd as "Would you like to upgrade to Business Class for HKD6500" or was it offered as "Would you like to upgrade your seat for HKD6500"?

If the former, I would be fighting it, even going as far as a chargeback, since the service paid for wasn't provided.

Business Class is more than just the seat, it is the lounge, the extra baggage, the meals, and so on.

If all they gave you was the seat and the meals, without giving you the extra - the lounge, the baggage, the points - then you have not received what you paid for, and I would be fighting it.

I am surprised at no lounge access though, as it is normally the boarding pass which gains entry, and you would have had a J boarding pass.

If however you were told all of this when paying for the upgrade, then it is all moot, but if you were I doubt you would be complaining on here.

I think you might have mis-read the statement. My read was it came with "no luggage allowance increase", "lounge access" and "Y status credits". So definitely lounge, no luggage (makes sense if sold at airport) and original class points.

I agree with your assessment - it makes a difference if it is sold as "Business Class" or as "an upgraded seat without all the trappings". For me a good comparison is the upgrades that BA offers, often at fantastic value, which are a proper upgrade with all the privileges.

It was posted as "No luggage allowance increase, lounge access, Y status credits and points." which to me means no luggage increase, no lounge access, Y status credits and points, otherwise, why mention the Y status credits and points?

Either way, if PAYING for a J seat, it should be J SC's and points.

If paying the J fare, then indeed it would be reissued and points credited accordingly; if kept in an economy booking class it should be economy class points

If just paying for an airport upgrade, then why should FF payouts be higher? at AUD818, it would seem likely that the passenger didn't pay for a business fare

Given that the poster said "No luggage allowance increase, lounge access, Y status credits and points"

I would see it as getting

(1) economy status credits and points
(2) lounge access
(3) original luggage allowance

if the "no" was to apply to all items then it should be "or" rather than "and" and would seem odd that he received "no economy status credits"

When I enquired at the airport when thay started Airport Upgrade to the Business Class Cabin, they made it clear to me that it did not change the booking fare class and you did not get the increased luggage allowance. I cannot recall the other rules, I did start a thread about this a few months ago, but as WP the exclusions did not really matter to me and IMO the charge for theBusiness Class seat was not worth it.

SIN-SYD on QF6 the prices quoted were:
S$420 Y->W
S$1000 Y->J
No extra benefits (e.g. luggage, SCs).

Apparently, there is a distinction between a 'Cabin Upgrade' and a 'Fare Upgrade'. These upgrades at the airport are classified as a Cabin Upgrade.

To Clarify my Post was for information not complaint. I asked for the upgrade at the OLCI check in desk at the airport, the staff did not know about it as they are from KA, after consulting their manual they found the price and processed it manually.

Booking class was not changed and e ticket was not reissued, a voucher was provided for a cabin upgrade to J. Also lounge access was provided to The Wing with no questions asked.

In terms of points earned, from QFF terms and conditions:
"9.5.1 ... Any applicable Cabin Class Bonus will be credited according to the class booked for travel, not the cabin flown or any waitlisted class..."

However, while for status credits, there isn't anything black and white, but it states that "20.1.8 It is the responsibility of the Member to check whether a proposed booking is eligible to earn Status Credits and if so how many Status Credits will be earned."

But generally speaking, you'll have to get the ticket reissued in the upgraded booking class to get the points/status, and this kind of upgrades done at the airport generally do not reissue the ticket.
