Alitalia MilleMiglia - AZ or Delta to Italy?
We are choosing between Delta and Alitalia for summer flts to Italy. In economy. Price is actualy a small bit more money for AZ. The Delta flts are old 767s. AZ are the A 330. Likely we would opt for their flt out of EWR, connecting in FCO to AZ domestic. Certainly the AZ planes look to be the better option, newer.
Yet, AZ has just the one flt from EWR each day and we still hear about the old Alitalia and those issues.
Any real concerns opting for AZ nowadays? Delays, lost baggage, etc? It seems most reviews are more positive than even one year ago.
Thanks in advance.

Personally I'd go for AZ over DL although Y vs Y isn't going to be massively different.. AVOD system on AZ A330 very good with decent selection of English speaking movies etc.
If you are going to transfer on to AZ that makes an even better case for flying AZ on the longhaul again.
Luggage problems don't have much to do with AZ - the problem is FCO so flying DL would make no difference
AZ is more punctual than DL (and most airlines for that matter)

Both options are crap. Choose another airline.
Plenty of option!

I'd give Alitalia a try. Sometimes flying on an airline of your destination country adds a nice little extra element, for me at least. From pictures i've seen, I think Alitalia catering should trump Delta. But if you can't get an edible pasta dish on AZ, I give up on this industry.

It is almost the same thing really.
Where do you need to fly to in Italy?
The nice thing about DL is the nonstops from JFK and ATL to VCE if you are headed to that part of Italy.
Alternatively I would just choose on schedule if the price is the same.

I've takne both on the MXP-JFK run (never taken either USA to Italy) in Y and I would give the edge to DL. I found the food surprisingly much better on DL and the entertainment selection on the AVOD was fine. The plane that I took on AZ three months ago was an old A330 that didn't even have personal TVs! I've also found DL generally more organized and consistent with their own rules, in particular when it comes to their elites.
When you say DL is using the "old 767s", do you mean the 767-300s or 767-400s? All the 764s are good with personal TVs and seat winglets. DL is in the process of updating their 763s and the updated ones are great. The non-updated ones should be avoided. If your possible flight is a 763, check the DL website to ensure the only entertainment option on that flight is "on demand" and not "overhead."

I'd take AZ. Unless your on DL's 777, there really isn't much value in their long-haul international flights - at least IMO and based on what I've read.
If I were you though, I'd be looking at Y+.
Thank you for the feedback.
Yes, it looks like Delta is flying their older 767-300s from Jfk to Fco. Yet, if they are trying to replace them with updated planes that would be good.
The food doesnt much interest us, in coach most seems similar. If in the back if the bus i bring a sandwich and the like. The sandwiches we make beat out whatever is served in Y by a long shot.
The Delta flt gives us a bit more connection time in FCO. That, plus the fact the Alitalia flts cost a bit more and AZ has only the one flt out of EWR, we likely will opt for Delta.
Thamks.

For myself I would take AA or BA.
On Skyteam I would rather take DL than AZ (I had a bad experience with AZ ROM-PAR. DL I have flown domestic before and it's not as good as UACO or AA, but it's not too bad.)
