All--

I'm a long time reader and I could use some help picking a honeymoon destination.

We're two late 20s working professionals getting married in mid August in Colorado. We're generally fairly active (hiking, biking, diving, and somewhat foodie to boot). We have very busy summers and falls planned (lots of work, work travel, etc.), and so we're looking for a place to get away from it all over the third week of August. We don't want a huge hotel--the more peace and quiet, the better. We live in big cities the rest of the time, so we'll probably avoid a big city. We'd like to restrict it to North America for ease of getting there.

Beaches would be great (but good beaches, if they're sorta meh, we're happy to do something else), but with stuff to do if we get bored. I'm looking to spend at max $400/night (we don't need an Aman here--not this trip), and (the soon to be) Mrs. fflier asked for two caveats: that we not have to dress for dinner, and that it not be one of those places where she would have to buy a new swim suit. Serious nightlife isn't required, but we'd rather not be the youngest folks by 40 years. Or just not meet the other folks.

A few preliminary thoughts:

*California--Not beachy in particular, but the Big Sur/Monterrey area, perhaps? Secluded, relaxing, and opportunities for hiking, etc. If not there, are there places farther south that wouldn't be mobbed?

*Florida Keys/Caribbean. Perhaps the Eastern (USVI/BVI/Other?), but what about hurricanes and mosquitos at that time of year? Any favorite spots?

*Outer banks--Kiawah Island/Sea Island/something equivalent?

*Costa Rica--This was the original plan. There's plenty to explore, but how are the beaches?

*Hawaii--Is the season right? Good choices for some privacy?

This is a bit disjointed, I know. But interesting suggestions (both building off of this and things that I forgot completely) would be much appreciated.

I say Hawaii. Kauai in particular. I think that sounds like the perfect place for you.

Unfortunately that is the tail end of the busy summer season, so prices may be higher and reservations more difficult than only a few weeks later, but give it a look. The island is never overrun by tourists, so you will always be able to find solitude and activities like hiking and kayaking. If you're not set on the large opulent resort like many honeymooners are, there are ample wonderful condo and vacation rental properties.

Perfect place would be Amangiri in Utah - it ticks all the boxes apart from a beach, but you won't miss it. VERY private and really beautiful.

Amangiri is a great base to do hiking/climbing (stunning country) but he can't get into Giri for $400/night, can he??? And it will be hot.

I could give you assorted BVI/USVI/Keys places but that time of year is definitely problematic for weather. If you want to take that chance (and the fact that it's still US vacation time so you'll have the people factor), let me know.

Kauai is a good possibility. Maybe Fiji? Non-stop from LA, many choices in the $400/night range/smaller/private resorts/diving/etc.

And I have to mention my homebase - the Pacific NW - the weather is awesome in the summer - there are zillions of active things to do. You could stay in/around Seattle (some very nice small hotels and inns) or Whistler or Bend, OR.

Amangiri would be amazing (as would other Amans)--it's the ultimate combination of 'things to do' with 'almost complete privacy'. I'm just not sure that it's in the budget--would there be a way to do so within my parameters?

I'm looking for that kind of experience on a lower budget. Yes, yes, I know--it's impossible to do an Aman for less money. But if we were willing to take a step down in luxury and experience while holding the central themes the same, are there choices that I should be thinking about?

IB8001--I'll take your Caribbean recommendations (PM would be fine or in the thread)--I'm going back and forth on it, but they're worth having in my back pocket. . .

Thanks to all.
