I'll arrive on a domestic flight around 1pm on a Sunday. Which will be a good bet, taxi or the subway line #3? I'll be traveling with an elderly, therefore comfort and convenience will be important. What's the taxi fare to city center (near 珠江新城‎), would that be below RMB150?

I would take a taxi if you're travelling with an elderly person. Carrying bags onto the metro and possibly messing around with train changes isn't much fun. There's also relatively comfortable express buses which serve many hotels in central GZ for cheap. I'm not entirely sure about taxi costs but I would estimate it to be more than RMB 150, CAN is quite far from downtown. Maybe RMB 150-200 is closer to the real cost. I've never stayed at a hotel in the area you describe though so I'm not certain.

I'd also take a taxi regardless of cost. Subway line 3 is a good bargain, but is a pain doing transfers, especially with luggage. Transfer stations are busy and crowded and will definitely be so on a Sunday afternoon. And you'll encounter steps when you least want to.

Your post gave me a mental image of attempting to take my grandmother on a subway in China. Ummm, the answer is, "no." I like the buses, myself, but this option also fails to pass the "grandma test" because: 1) in general, they don't have stellar suspension systems; and 2) it can be difficult to fetch taxis near their drop off points.

I estimate that the taxi will cost you 120 or less, but I haven't been down there in about a year, so I'm not sure about the current fare structure. Even if you end up dropping as much as 250, I think the taxi option is a no brainer in your situation.

It's about 50km. At 2.5RMB/km it's about 125RMB. Add for traffic, etc, it should still be 150RMB or less.
