Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer - Downgrade from New J to Regional J ... compensation?

I'm booked on 423 from BOM tonight, and was notified a few hours ago that there was an aircraft swap, so I lost my 2 seats in the mini-cabin on the 77W (11A and 12A) and now have seats on the regional business class product.

I specifically booked this flight because of the 77W product, since it takes off at 00:20 from BOM and lands SIN around 8:00am. I flew the regional J product a week ago on an overnight flight and didn't like it at all.

At the moment, I asked the agents if they could reroute me on a carrier that has lie-flats, but they wouldn't do so. After that, I asked for the station manager, but he's at home asleep and no one can give any compensation without his approval. Any suggestions? Flight boards in an hour ...

And yeah, before you call me out for complaining, the SQ agent who phoned me called it a downgrade ... why else would they phone me to tell me about an aircraft change? If they consider it a downgrade, I find compensation should follow ...

You are lucky they did not do this to you:

This is what I call a real downgrade!!!

Now that's what I call a s**tty seat

In SIN now, agent at BOM told me to contact SIA head offices for any sort of compensation. It ended up being a 77A, and the bed was difficult to sleep in, plus there were several infants in the cabin ... while the crying was somewhat limited, there was a lot of movement amongst the parents, so the loss of the mini-cabin sucked. Oh well, c'est la vie, but still think compensation is warranted.

You don't get compensation. I was supposed to be in a SpaceBed once which was substituted for the old, old, old J where the seat reclines just around 40% and that's it. No compensation, just bad luck in terms of one of SQ's dreadful substitutions.

Being downgraded to a 77A - do you seriously expect compensation? Whilst they're not 77W's, the 77A's are pretty good for most short-ish flights. Get thrown on to an old regional product with 2-3-2 - now that's a real downgrade.

It might have been a shortish flight, but it was an overnight one (dep 12:30pm, arr 8:00am). I planned my day around having a lie-flat bed on my redeye flight, only to find out just before departure that it wasn't true. I had flown the 77A a couple weeks before hand and it's difficult for me to sleep on it.

You'll find some that prefer the 77A! (OK not many, but there are few people out there who do). IMHO, As far as angled seats go it is one of the better ones out there, but not quite as good as fully flat seat onthe 77W.

SQ are hardly the only culprits when it comes to aircraft substitution (TG is famous for it, QF do occasionally as well), and I think you'd find that none of the carriers provide any form of compensation when doing aircraft subs if you still travel in the same class of service. Unfortunately (for the passenger) the contract and T&C is for travel from A to B at a random time, maybe in a particular class of travel, but certainly does not contain any representation as to aircraft/seat type.

Yeah, but the terrible product that you *might* get switched to, like the pre-historic birds on SQ where the biz seat barely reclines, seems to be a lot worse than TG/QF... or do they also have such old planes that they pull out of the museum?

QF worst case scenario is a 767 with recliner "dreamtime" seats that are not dissimilar to SQ's old regional product, although granted probably very unlikely to get that, although wouldn't rule it out as a sub on routes like SYD-MNL, SYD-CGK.

Now as for TG, they still have one 744 museum piece, which I had the dubious pleasure of travelling on BKK-PEK in December, and it made SQ's old regional seats seem like the height of luxury. But even TG's museum 744 was luxury compared to their A300 coming back from PUS on the same trip. No PTVs, limited recline and 38" pitch. At least I knew what to expect, as it was scheduled for the service, I certainly hope they wouldn't substitute it for something else at short notice.

I received compensation, in the form of a $400 onboard duty free voucher, when I was downgraded from new F on a 773 to old F on a 772, flying DXB-SIN. The check-in staff were extremely apologetic and freely admitted that it was a downgrade.

The check-in staff at BOM were the same about this J downgrade (and admitted it was a downgrade). But they said they didn't have authority to give vouchers. There were 2 pax in F, but F was the same on the new aircraft (the new non-suite F).

The great things about the old cabins is that there is lots of additional space for the friends and families of the ground crews to be allocated  ... makes for a double bonus when swapped the flat seat away under your gluteus maximus.

I got my 77W swapped out for a medium ancient 777 at the gate in SYD, so SQ did not think it was necessary to inform me at any time that this would happen :( .
