Too bad you have to travel by early June, though. SAP isn't so great, but folks use it as a springboard to the coast where there's good beaches/diving/snorkeling. I've always want to visit Honduras (one of the few Central American countries I haven't been to). Supposedly quite nice and inexpensive. Alas, I don't have time to go in the next 6 weeks. BTW, "SAP" is one of those codes that leaves 90% of Flyertalkers guessing "where the heck is that?" When the city is obscure, it's VERY helpful to put the full name in the title. Thanks. abitlost Apr 29, 12, 4:21 pm I'm seeing $206.90 for certain dates in June and am tempted. If I recall correctly, Delta was selling this route for around $150 a few years ago shortly following the coup. SteelJ Apr 29, 12, 5:56 pm The island of Utila isn't too far from SAP, and it is supposedly the cheapest place (~$250) to get your open water scuba certification in the Western Hemisphere. I haven't been, but I've heard good things from friends about the diving and the island in general. And it's supposed to be one of the better places to see whale sharks in Central America. From what I gather, it's more of a backpacker/party vibe than a high end scuba destination. flyinghigh77 Apr 29, 12, 6:21 pm seems to be fixed for sample dates mentioned. price doubled. Desdinova Apr 29, 12, 7:06 pm seems to be fixed for sample dates mentioned. price doubled. Still available at 206 for, at minimum, the end of May. peachfront Apr 29, 12, 7:11 pm As per Desdinova, I'm still seeing the $206 fare for many dates in May. Thinking to do this if I can get to NYC for a reasonable price. Any birders out there who want to meet up in Honduras? Will snorkel too. Scuba is out of my comfort zone... Second edit...there are also dates in June and I can get to NYC affordably in June. MichaelKade Apr 29, 12, 7:30 pm Found it, but dont see any reasonable flights to/from ATL. I'll be in BOS for a concert one of those weekends too. :-/ If only I could find cheap late night transit... Oh well! flyinghigh77 Apr 29, 12, 7:42 pm if you do flexible search, there are still a lot of dates coming up, indeed. however, the dates i posted initially are gone now. MelP Apr 29, 12, 8:08 pm Found it, but dont see any reasonable flights to/from ATL. I'll be in BOS for a concert one of those weekends too. :-/ If only I could find cheap late night transit... Oh well! Megabus has a midnight bus (well 11:59pm) to NYC, and I think there's a Chinatown bus that leaves at like 2AM. bdschobel Apr 29, 12, 9:04 pm I grabbed a ticket for $206 in early June. Never been to Honduras! Bruce saturnino3 Apr 29, 12, 9:14 pm This is a great fare! Some friends and I flew into SAP last November on the LAX-SAP $187 fare on CO/UA and had a local driver wait for us at SAP and take us directly to the Roatan ferry in La Ceiba (~3.00 hr. drive). Driver charged us $140 USD each way but split between 4, the price was manageable. The drive was in a recent model van -- everything was very, very comfortable, safe, and low-key. I have his information if anyone is interested. He also picked us up at the La Ceiba ferry station and drove us directly to the SAP airport. Taking the bus in Honduras is cheap but it takes forever and the schedules are not ideal for arriving in SAP and arriving in Roatan that same day-- it is likely that you will waste a day in SAP or La Ceiba, both of which are dull and potentially unsafe. You might not get shot but you might die of boredom. Roatan was INCREDIBLE. Spent a 8 days in the West Bay... :D:D:D Stayed in the beachfront house at Bananarama Yarhead Apr 29, 12, 9:50 pm Found it, but dont see any reasonable flights to/from ATL. I'll be in BOS for a concert one of those weekends too. :-/ If only I could find cheap late night transit... Oh well! I suspect your concert will end too late, but I'm going to post 3 BOS-EWR transit options anyway. In all cases, make sure you check in for the flight in advance, and if budget allows, leave the option open for cabs whenever possible. Boston-EWR options: 1) Chinatown bus--> Walk/Cab --> PATH--> Bus--> Airtrain 11:00 PM: Grab LuckyStar Chinatown bus at Boston South Station 3:00 AM: Bus supposedly arrives at 55-59 Chrystie Street, at which point you make your way over to the World Trade Center PATH train station, which is just over 1 mile southwest of where the bus lets you off. At that hour, the best way to do it would be by hailing a cab or walking. 3:25 AM (or 4:00 AM, if you miss the 3:25): PATH train leaves for Newark Penn Station (PATH schedule is the same on Sunday and Monday) 3:47 AM: PATH train has arrived at Newark Penn Station 4:00 AM: NJ Transit Bus (Line 62) leaves Newark Penn Station (Raymond Blvd. side) for Newark Airport 4:16 AM: Get off at Newark Airport Terminal A 4:25 AM: Take Airtrain from Terminal A to Terminal B 4:28 AM: You've arrived at Terminal B Note that for this option, if it's a Sunday and you've missed the 3:25 AM Path, the 4:00 AM PATH will get you into Newark Penn Station on the late side, and you'll need to wait for the 5:00 AM bus and not arrive in EWR Terminal B till 5:30 or so. Remember that you're flight is at 6:15 AM... If it's a Monday and you've missed the 3:25 AM PATH, the 4:00 AM PATH may not entirely screw you; you'll be in better shape, with the NJ Transit Train 3209 leaving from Newark Penn Station at 4:49 AM for Newark Airport Station, connecting to a 5:00 AM Airtrain which will get to EWR Terminal B at 5:10 AM. Cuts it really close if you ask me. I had to give you the PATH itinerary because, even if you venture up to midtown from the Lower East Side bus dropoff, there's nothing that gets you into Terminal B earlier than 5:10 AM. On the bright side, if things work out, the PATH + Bus itinerary is extremely inexpensive, less than $4.00 all-in from Manhattan (Airtrain is free within EWR) 2) Megabus--> Walk --> NJTransit--> Airtrain (this option will only work on a Sunday-Thursday night, not Fri/Sat- that is, only weekday early morning) 11:59 PM: Grab Megabus at Boston South Station, Gate 12 4:14 AM: Bus arrives at 7th Ave and 28th Street, at which point you make your way over to Penn Station, only short blocks away at 7th and 32nd (I hope the bus arrives on time) 4:30 AM: NJ Transit Train 3209 leaves for Newark Airport Railroad Station (weekdays only- again, this can't be a Sunday morning) 4:52 AM: Train arrives at Newark Airport Railroad Station 5:00 AM: Airtrain leaves for Newark Airport Terminal B 5:10 AM: Train arrives at Newark Airport Terminal B This option, again, won't work on Sunday morning, and also is obviously risky, especially because the Megabus could easily be late. Also, if you're checking a bag, you'll probably miss the cutoff even if things go right. Take a cab from midtown if you can swing it. 3) My favorite option given its unexpectedness/creativity/ease: Megabus--> NJTransit--> Airtrain (also will only work on weekday morning) 11:20 PM: Grab Megabus at Boston South Station 4:00 AM: Bus arrives at Secaucus Junction Station (you're already in NJ!) 4:00 AM: Consider a cab at this point, but you're still kinda far from Newark, as Secaucus is quite close to NYC as it is. Or: 4:26 AM: Train 3809 leaves for Newark Airport Station 4:42 AM: Train 3809 arrives at Newark Airport Station 4:45 AM: Airtrain leaves for Newark Airport Terminal B, arrives at 4:55 AM. Or: 5:00 AM (you missed the 4:45): Airtrain leaves for Newark Airport Terminal B, arrives at 5:10 AM And there you have it. Hope these were helpful to you or other late night travelers, let's say even from other destinations besides Boston. Yarhead Apr 29, 12, 9:52 pm Interestingly enough, this flight being from EWR in the early morning is a dealbreaker for the folks I told about it. Nice post by the OP though! 3xter Apr 29, 12, 10:08 pm Thank OP for the credit :) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/18480849-post623.html I didn't post here because at 5.01 cpm it doesn't really qualify as a mileage run but I guess people are interested anyhow . Yarhead Apr 29, 12, 10:11 pm It should be noted that for those of you living elsewhere, Boltbus has routes to Newark. Boltbus.com is down right now, presumably for maintenance, but I think those routes extend to Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., etc., though I don't know how they match up with a 6:15 AM EWR-ATL-SAP flight schedule. That said, I believe the flight's routing will allow for an overnight in ATL up to 24 hours, so if you have time and/or want to crash in/explore ATL, the Boltbus could at least give you a nice connection to Newark so you can start your trip. mizzou miles Apr 30, 12, 12:21 am BTW, "SAP" is one of those codes that leaves 90% of Flyertalkers guessing "where the heck is that?" When the city is obscure, it's VERY helpful to put the full name in the title. Thanks. really? do they not have access to the google? Further, this is a site for frequent fliers right? I wont hazard to guess how many do or dont know but it is pretty standard parlance around here. great fare from NYC, too bad to SAP - a real dump! MichaelKade Apr 30, 12, 5:49 am I suspect your concert will end too late, but I'm going to post 3 BOS-EWR transit options anyway. Bingo. Option 2 could work for time but sadly it's not available during the week. I could extend my trip a few days and do a Mon-Wed but that would add more $$ than I'm willing to pay for Honduras. Maybe if it was somewhere a bit nicer... Regardless, THANK YOU for putting that together!!! LeftsideWindow Apr 30, 12, 7:20 am really? do they not have access to the google? Further, this is a site for frequent fliers right? I wont hazard to guess how many do or dont know but it is pretty standard parlance around here. I doubt most FT'ers know a significant number of airports that service < 1M passengers/year... Kudos to those that do - but save the rest of us some googling! :D hotelmotel Apr 30, 12, 7:33 am I thought at first it was Sao Paulo :) iahphx Apr 30, 12, 7:37 am Thank OP for the credit :) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/18480849-post623.html I didn't post here because at 5.01 cpm it doesn't really qualify as a mileage run but I guess people are interested anyhow . Please don't "hide" $200 int'l flights in the "good deals in economy" section. How many $200 int'l airfares are there? Given the taxes on such tickets, it's almost impossible for them to be cheaper. You'd literally need $2 airfares! I doubt most FT'ers know a significant number of airports that service < 1M passengers/year... Kudos to those that do - but save the rest of us some googling! :D Yeah, I felt like a sap for not knowing this city code (bada bing), but you can't know everything. I assume the percentage of flyertalkers that have ever flown into this airport is at about 1%, so I doubt it's common knowledge. gil123 Apr 30, 12, 7:54 am Well I'm one of the 1% because I did it about a year and a half ago, for a sub $300 fare on Delta last time it was available. I would disagree with those who dismiss it as "a dump" (easy answer for anyone who has not been to a city or a country). Yes, parts of Honduras are a little dangerous, lots of armed guards and need to be careful where you walk and drive at night-- but found SAP to be a great place for a long weekend visit. In our case, we spent a day at the ruins at Copan and one at the waterfalls at Pulhapanzak. The city itself has a nice cathedral and interesting open air market, as well as some pretty good restaurants. IMO if you are a seasoned traveler and a little extra vigilant and this can be a nice and cheap MR/getaway. If I hadn't already been there recently (or had time to go to one of the islands) I'd be all over this for $206. Please don't "hide" $200 int'l flights in the "good deals in economy" section. When I saw that it was in a country I've never visited, I had to grab one of these cheapie tickets. And I did! Bruce flyinghigh77 Apr 30, 12, 8:13 am i wonder if the people dismissing sap as a dump have ever been there, especially in recent times? i do not want to defend sap, because i simply don't know. just wondering. sadly, the dates that worked for me are no longe available. Duke777 Apr 30, 12, 9:21 am Great fare. I went to SAP/Honduras back in December to visit a friend working for the peace corps. I didn't spend time in SAP, except catching a bus at the bus station. I felt decently safe the entire time and took public buses and mini buses. Copan has some neat ruins and is a bit "touristy." It's also relatively safe once you get there. Send me a PM if you want some details. Catusa Apr 30, 12, 3:08 pm Was just going to book this but the fare is gone :-( 3xter May 1, 12, 7:45 am Flying this right now got upgraded all the way through.. bdschobel May 1, 12, 8:35 am Let us know what you do down there. I need some good ideas for my June trip! Bruce Nason May 1, 12, 11:17 am Wish I caught this earlier - have heard Roatan is incredible. Does anyone know if this is still available? Have checked dl site as well as a couple of search engines through May & June, but to no avail. Thanks all TacaCopaFlyer May 2, 12, 5:49 pm Also remember in SAP to factor in the $38 departure tax! Even if on a same day return, you may have to pay this. The airport at SAP is on it's 5th or 6th year of renovations, and they seem to have the A/C working in most areas, but there is not much there. The old TACA club that accepted priority pass has shut down. THe new club is pretty much limited to Credomatic branded credit cards. I visit about every 2 weeks and will be departing from there tomorrow and can guest in 2 people. Will be there from about 2 pm to 3:30 pm. |
