Hey, so I'm looking at a rate to rent a car from the Rapid City, SD (RAP) airport and on the screen where it gives me my rate, under the "policy information" section it says all the normal stuff:

Important Policy Information: All renters and additional drivers must meet the minimum age requirements for the renting location. A major credit card or debit card and a valid driver's license both in the name of the renter will be required at the time of rental. Debit and check cards, considered to be any non-credit card bearing the VISA or MasterCard logo (except for gift/prepaid cards) may only be used in conjunction with proof of round trip ticket (airline, cruise ship and the like). Without proof of roundtrip ticket, debit or check cards are only accepted on return. Any other non-credit card without the VISA or MasterCard logo is not accepted. Customers planning to rent with cash must bring the following documentation to the rental counter: valid Driver's License, a return ticket from an airline, cruise ship or train, verifiable employment, verifiable home phone number or a current verifiable gas or electric bill with the renter's name and address. All documentation must be in the renter's name. A cash deposit will be required in addition to the cost of rental.

But then immediately under that it says:

"Exceptions RAPID CITY ARPT"

My question is, what exception applies to the Rapid City Airport?

Might be the cash deposit, as there are many locations that don't take cash, require a credit/debit card. In the terms I have seen some locations don't take debit cards, and require a credit card (not sure why no debit cards, sure there is some reason).

There might be also be a term in the contract that South Dakota state law forbids, and so the legal disclaimer.

I was stuck at the airport one day and actually read some of the terms of the various car rental firms. I'm glad I have contracted rates and terms, as it is unreal some of the things some of the companies put in their terms.

One example, Budget puts either a $200 hold, or the cost of your rental, whichever is higher, on your credit card when you pick it up. Hertz, on the other hand puts $200 PLUS the cost of your rental hold on your rental. You do a couple of rentals, and a couple of hotel rooms on a credit card and they have put some pretty large holds on your credit card. I find Budget's to be much more reasonable, especially when you see how long Hertz takes to release the hold. Book cars for two or three people, along with rooms and you will see how quickly the holds adds up. Put a car on your Debit card, and well, hope you don't have any large emergency cash needs while you have the car.

My experience is that if it says "Exceptions LOCATION" and then lists nothing, then there are no exceptions. If there were an exception, it would be listed after that line. You can look this up via the "Special Policies" link in the location directory.

That said, I don't know that I'd count on the exceptions to be accurate. To confirm the above, I looked up the exceptions for Rapid City, as well as for the CAK location; I just dropped off there and remembered seeing a sign on the counter saying that they accept debit cards at pickup with a copy of a round trip itinerary. The special policy info on the website says they only accept debit at time of return.

Hertz, on the other hand puts $200 PLUS the cost of your rental hold on your rental.

$200 plus the cost of your rental *before discounts.* On an award redemption with Hertz that ended up costing $24, they preauthorized $800. I was happy to be using up my last Hertz credits when I saw that!

Same here - rental costing $3.55 after free day being applied had a hold on my credit card of about $400. Really annoying.
