While the Mets are out of town there will be an event at Citi Field that you should be aware of for traffic reasons, a massive anti-Internet rally by Orthodox Jews: http://www.jewishpress.com/news/breaking-news/mass-rally-of-jews-against-the-internet-to-pack-shea-stadium-in-may/2012/04/26/

If you are traveling into or out of LGA/JFK you may want to check traffic first.

I honestly thought your post was making a joke (a la "The Onion") until I read the actual article!

Same here.

I doubt traffic will be any worse than the 81 games the Mets play at home, and on a Sunday evening, even less so.

Of course the Mets don't sell out and the Hasids might.

I wonder if the team will leave Ike Davis at home for this. Or bring back Art Shamsky.

What unwarranted fear mongering! This event does not require a separate thread on FT. Most frequent fliers already know enough to check the traffic report before leaving for the airport.

First of all, I don't care who holds an event at Citi Field, it should make no difference to traffic unless there is significant police reaction expected, e.g. an Occupy Wall Street type of incident.

The title of this thread, if kept, should be, "Traffic Alert: event scheduled for May 20 at Citi Field."

Next, OP, the people running this event are not "Orthodox Jews" but hasidim as should be readily apparent from the both the photograph as well as the lede which reads "Tens of thousands of Ultra-Orthodox Jews will participate in a huge rally to be held on Sunday evening. . ."

The term "Ultra-Orthodox Jews" as most New Yorkers know, is newspaper-speak for hasidim. Why they don't just write that word, I don't know. The Jewish Press, in fact, is a Modern Orthodox newspaper whose readers would be very unlikely to attend such an activity.

I think they are going to be lucky to get 1/10 of the stadium filled but regardless of that, it should make no difference versus a Mets game.

Fear mongering? LOL, hyperbole much?

This event does not require a separate thread on FT. Most frequent fliers already know enough to check the traffic report before leaving for the airport.

Is this thread any less worthy than the other traffic threads currently in the forum (e.g. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/new-york-city/1339391-massive-occupy-wall-street-march-5-1-threaten-shut-down-bridges-tunnels.html)?

But more importantly, discussion of moderation is prohibited per the TOS, which surely you have read. The appropriate action is to report a bad post.

I'm glad that you don't care. Others might, however.

Something to bring up with the moderators. ^

You should take that up with the publishers of the story I cited. If jewishpress.com isn't being specific enough for you, you should definitely let them know. ^

The term "Ultra-Orthodox Jews" as most New Yorkers know, is newspaper-speak for hasidim.

Do you have a cite for that claim? Do you think most New Yorkers are well-versed in the various nuances of the various sects of Judaism? Maybe Jews are, but I would seriously doubt most New Yorkers are.

Nice prediction.

The bottom line here is that a massive protest is being planned and it will very likely affect traffic in the NYC area. It may be a miserable failure, as you allude to, but I'm not taking any chances. I'm trying to help our fellow FTers plan accordingly. ^

But having read the TOS, you surely knew that already. :p

I believe there are Litvaks and other mitnagdim involved in this, not just hasidim, in which case it wouldn't be correct to refer to it as a hasidic event. Which presumably is why they've labeled it an ultra-orthodox or haredi event, since that includes both hasidic and non-hasidic crazies. ;)

When I think of orthodox Jews, I think black hats. When I think of black hats, I think hasidim and lubuvitch.

I grew up orthodox, or what some would consider today, modern orthodox.
disclaimer, I'm a Conservative Jew. :o

Im at a complete loss to understand why the OP felt he had to start a thread about this and probably doesnt every time theres a rock concert or subway series (Yanks playing the Mets at Citi or previous Shea) Citi field as well as Shea before it and Yankee stadiums play host to many a private function every year yet I believe this is the 1st time the OP has made a post about it

If the OP simply wanted to warn folks why Only regarding this particular function and not all the others, then lets not forget when Giants Stadium or the arenas in Newark are being used that will affect folks heading to/from EWR

Actually in the summer both CitiField and Giants Stadium will be full for a private function why hasnt the OP warned about that by the same group on the same day at the same time span

As others have put it so well why is this any different then when any of these venues are soldout due to the teams that are playing, it shouldnt and isnt

The obvious difference is that ballgames and concerts have published schedules and are very easy to plan around. If it wasn't for jewishtimes.com I for one would have no idea that there was an event occurring at Citi on this day. Indeed, it is not listed on the Citi website.

As for why not warning of other events, I certainly would if they came to my attention. This one did as I was browsing through jewishpress.com.

Also do you view this as saliently different than the OWS warning thread? I mean protests happen everyday in New York, we don't need a new thread about every one, right?

Thanks for your questions.

Please check the internet for updates!

What a silly thread. "People will be at a large stadium that often has large numbers of people."

I'm betting that a larger percentage of this crowd will use public transportation than a usual crowd.

As the NYC forum community has now been notified of this event and this thread has now devolved into discussions of moderation and Judaism, we'll now stick a fork in it. If & when traffic issues do arise pertaining to the event, please contact me my PM if you would like ro request reopening.
