My GF has been a CA for 13 years at NH and recently gotten to 3 cabin International Chief Purser. Part of something she was told is if customers were to ask about ANA, they have a speech which includes ANA is the only "major airline" to never declare bankruptcy or have any kind of furlough. She's heard this before and her manager reminds them of this and she even used that line when she was recruiting for a couple of years too.

Recently she started to question whether it is actually a true statement since she doesnt like talking about BS esp to passengers in the first cabin. i looked and i dont know what the definition of "major" airline is but can anyone think of OA that havent bankrupted or gone through any layoff? (other than attrition I guess)

If you use flightstats' definition of major airline, then the statement isn't true. CX, SQ, etc all considered as major carriers. I don't think CX has declared bankruptcy before. But if they say major airline in Japan, then it is true since only JAL and ANA are considered "major" in Japan

+1. thanks. I thought there was some kind of layoff with NH in the 90's or something but I could have been wrong on that one. I just found it VERY impressive that they never have. GF has had such amazingly horrific experiences on the 787 and knows corporate has been covering up or media blackout on some incidents that she is just tired and thought this was statement was bull too.

(maincabin door started releasing on its own on pushback and she had to rush to disengage the door and was on the ground trying to keep it from opening.) filed a huge complaint with ops and they said.. oh.. ok.. noted) meanwhile, she had a massive bruise on her shoulder she she whacked it on the door. of course no sick time! they get 20 days a year but encouraged not to use it!

NH has asked employees to take unpaid leaves before

So never filed bankruptcy? yes. Voluntary unpaid leaves? yes...but I guess they haven't had any layoff

There is a difference between voluntary unpaid leave and an involuntary furlough.

In the case of this speech, it would seem that they are basing it all on Japanese airlines as many Asian airlines have never gone bankrupt.

outside of the dispute for calling NH a MAJOR airline, I guess the general feel is they are clearly the only major to never have furlough or bankrupcty? that is as impressive as qantas not having major accidents!

Japanese labor law is such that you basically can't lay people off unless the business is no longer a going concern. And even then you have to come up with a voluntary personnel reduction scheme first, e.g. offering early retirement options to senior employees. Voluntary reductions are somewhat common nowadays, but JAL is one of very few big Japanese companies to make it all the way to the layoff stage.
