Is it possible to do this and how would the price be discounted? I have a long journey ahead and not enough points left for an upgrade. I will also be flying out of an awful airport (Dammam).

You will generally pay full price at checkin - no discounts are generally offered.

Difference in fare. Qatar doesn't play this game, nor does Emirates.

it has been reported that EK does offer fixed cash upgrades on occasion at check-in and/or on board. EK is also known to offer upgrades via e-mail for selected pax within a given time window before the flight. I once got an email offer of USD 750 ZRH/DXB Y->J
