This is possible quite a lot on BA metal but does anyone have success stories on AY metal?

Not really, there was another thread about this some months ago..they used to offer these at some long haul outstantions but haven't seen any since mid last decade or so..never seen any at HEL.

I tried flying SIN HEL about 3 weeks ago with no luck, same flying HEL SIN.

I'm doing the same run again in a few weeks, I'll try my luck and let you know how I go this time.

Flying tonight to Singapore AY081. Only rows 1-5 booked for business. They sometimes open business class rows 6-7 for high tier and hight price ticket passanges with economy service. Supposing also tonight. They can not sell additional business seats because of this and they should have pre-booked the business meals also.

Heard a rumour that some AY customers receiving e-mail offering upgrade to business class for 500 euros on BKK route (one way?).

Any FTers more info about this? Rules, bookingclass, miles etc?

Got similar offer to CKG (flight in two weeks). Price was 350 e.

As mentioned, points according to the original booking class and naturally applies only to the reservation (exact PNR) you are part of.

Are the numbers mentioned here (500€, 350€) one-way upgrade?

And the timing was 2 weeks ahead of flight? Wondering if I should wait until T-14 and see if there is an offer and if not apply for upgrade by voucher.

Affirm, flying on the 3th of June and got the offer today. Price is for one way only.

Must say it is a very good price.

I'm assuming these offers are directed at AY+ members of higher tiers, and only on certain routes with low demand in J. Otherwise they are really devaluating the J tickets. Maybe that is what we already have seen on BKK route, where they cannot keep the J ticket price up.

OT-ish: CKG seems not working well yet. Repeatedly sub 400€ offers in Y, even ex scandinavia. 1400€ in J ex LHR recently. I'm going there in july, not a single seat in J was occupied at seat selection.

How do you figure? A base price of let's say 800€ for deep discount Y + 2 upgrades at 500€ puts this J lite ticket to 1800€ without the hassle of points. Ex-STO you can get a real J ticket with all benefits for less.

I am kettle with AY, but perhaps this has got something to do with booking class or OW elite status in general?

I talked to a purser recently and he estimated load was about 50% for this route.

If they target the offer based on fare class (like YBH or other "upper" econ fare classes), then my calculation is wrong, but here's a fare example, ie what I recently booked:

CPH-CKG 2 kettle pax in Y (actually W) 799€: 400€/pax r/t

CPH-CKG myself in J (actually I business saver): 2407€

"Value" of a one-way upgrade: close to 1000€ (since upgrade only is applied to LH part)

Cheapest possible CKG-route I ever saw in J was ex LHR which was around 1400€ in business campaign, making an upgrade worth around 500€ + the "joys" of LHR transits and positioning flights.

ex-HEL campaign prices: 546€ in W
ex-HEL biz: 3900€ in I

If AY can't fill up the main cabin with either "saver" tickets ex-HEL or subsidised connecting flights, I don't see offering upgrades for cash diluting the cabin any more than an opup for whatever reason.

ex HEL is always high with the "direct-route-penalty", so it is difficult to use that for comparison. Direct routes on SK ex CPH are in figures like that, maybe a few hundreds lower , probably due to HEL being the smallest nordic airport (with least competition)

I will modify my take on dilution: It is difficult to say since we don't know who will get the offer and how many offers they make. If it is capacity controlled (ie only offered on the normal upgrade seats) then J fare is not further diluted at all (the voucher upgrade is, though, if they sell the upgrade space 2 weeks ahead)

What I meant was that maybe the CKG base fare should be adjusted to get a good steady J demand instead of treating it like a leisure flight (pay extra for "comfort class")

Not sure if that price is so good value, as for tier members it really offers "only" better seat, full bar and better catering as extra.

If it was new J on my flight, then I would maybe consider it again. :)
