Used up all our miles for now for another business class trip but are now looking at flying in coach on flight 1 from SFO to SIN. THere is an amazing fare in coach out there for when we are travelling.

What is your honest opinion of coach on them? We are 5'10" and 5'8". If the fare wasn't so low, we wouldn't even consider this, but it is and we are.

Thank you in advance...

Coach is coach :) But some coaches are better than others. SQ is one of the best ones in the market. I travel SFO-SIN regularly every month in coach and I find it quite comfortable. I am also 5'10 and I usually opt for seat 31 C, D or F (bulkhead aisle) that gives me unlimited legroom.

The added advantage of 31 D or F is that the magazine holder is at a perfect distance and height to act as a faux leg rest so it works perfectly for me!

If arrival timing is not important for you I would suggest SQ 15 via ICN. That flight is not always full so you may get a chance of getting 3 seats to yourself. SQ 1 via HKG on the other hand is almost always full and if you travel at this time of the year it's a 14+ hour flight to HKG as opposed to 11 hours to ICN.

Food wise you will get 2 full meals + mid-flight snacks on both flights. IFE is top notch and you won't run out of options!

I am also looking at SFO/LAX - SIN airfares- can you tell me where you found the "amazing" fare?

Thanks,
Friendly

SQ has the best econ product out there.

Just pay the small charge for one of the exit seats and you will be all set.

The best E- product which caters for non-elites, I'd say.

They treat all customers in coach exactly the same and let them do whatever they want in my experience. Great if you travel with grandparents or kids who have not yet been domesticated onto planes not soooo great if you are a pampered elite who is used to the preferential treatment on their home carriers.

If you travel as a group of two it is bearable IMO. Alone, I'd rather not travel SQ longhaul in coach.

I absolutely love flying on SQ alone, it's flying with kids that becomes a problem when they still qualify for bassinets. SQ is famous for their faster-than-Usain-Bolt response to the seat-belt sign lighting up.

Is it a bad thing that elites and non-elites are treated the same in econ? I've been SQ *G for ages but never expected anything special compared to a fellow passenger in Y.

That is a philosophical question and they usually have trivial answers out in the real world.

So does this one: it is a good thing for the non-elite and a bad thing for the elite. Hence I usually feel a bit better and safer on other carriers rather than on SQ even though the product in coach is quite solid.

SQ is one of my favorite airlines too.

I think this goes beyond SQ. IMHO, it's more of a Singapore thing. Everyone there cares so much about every tiny rule that it's a bit too much for me at times.

You clearly don't drive here  ...

Or maybe it's just the big rules they so generously ignore.

I agree with most on this thread. SQ is a great airline and has what I think is the best economy class out there. When you combine their SQ*G priority boarding with the nice economy setup, it's quite a nice flight.

I fly SFO > SIN > BOM approx four times a year.

I would like to know where this great fare can be found!

And, stay away from seat 50G, there is no overhead compartment. All the seats in the center section actually have a more shallow overhead compartment than the seats on the side of the plane. Some luggage won't fit in these compartments.

Echo that coach is bearable on SQ, especially on the day flight via ICN (SQ 15), leaves at a civilised hour, and you don't feel the pressure to get some sleep knowing you can always go straight to bed when arriving in SIN. Much better than leaving at 1am via HKG.

As for the elites thing, there is some OK treatment for PPS's, particularly around seating you just have to know the tricks (eg I've found decent seats only emerge if you avoid OLCI, contrary to the core belief of having to OLCI early to get the best possible seat). Don't think the same goes for KF or star golds though.

Can't you just pick your seat at the time you make your booking?
