Mileage Run Discussion - DL MR for ~10k miles

I'm probably going to be about 10k miles short of Gold status and I'm thinking about doing a MR at some point over the summer to put me over the top. I'm close to PHL, EWR, LGA and JFK. I don't need a deal right now, but does any one have any tips on where to be looking? I'd love to do this in one trip if possible, so it looks like Eastern Europe or maybe South America? Are there particular regions to which DL (or another ST airline) is more likely to have deals, etc.? I follow this forum pretty closely but I'm wondering if there's anything else I should do as well.

Thanks... may not be able to get away until late May/June, but good to know. After I posted I got to thinking that two transcons might be better than trying to go to some far flung location for a weekend...

This. Look for something cheap to LAX, SFO, PDX, or SEA. Avoid NYC airports as your origination point if possible, find a spoke city with a connection for 1000 more miles. JFK, DTW, ATL routings tend to be the best depending on your cities; forget MSP, MEM, CVG, and SLC. Head west on a Friday evening, red-eye back, then repeat on Saturday. Easily as many miles as a trip to Europe, and probably cheaper. Plus you stand a chance at being upgraded, and you're less likely to be hosed and miss work on Monday if you misconnect somewhere. Just make sure to put both round trips on the same itinerary (don't book separately). This will help you in the event of IROPS, and it will also save you some $$$ on 9/11 fees.

PHL-SEA fares for about 300ai RT right now. PHL-PDX for about 270.

It is not enough miles but right now you have many dates EWR-SAP for $206. 3850 miles. No visa needed for Honduras which is not necessarily the case for South America or Eastern Europe -- don't really know costs of a visa to Eastern Europe but to some South American destinations it's pretty pricey. I think my Bolivia visa cosst $135. I am not from the north so I have to do a trip just to get up there and back to EWR but I can let you know if I decide to do the Honduras trip. This looks to be more of a snorkel/scuba type place. You could do two or three runs maybe, catch some whale shark fabulousness, and get your miles? I just checked the calendar on Delta moments ago, and there are many dates still available for May and into June.
