I am flying PHL to SFO on US; then SFO to PDX on UA. I will be in SFO around 8 pm on a Saturday. What is the best way to go from Terminal 1 to the United Terminal? Is there a shuttle bus behind security? or do I have to exit and redo security at the UA terminal?

Please follow this thread in the California-San Francisco forum.
Thanks.

You will have to exit T1 and either walk to T3 or take AirTrain. You will have to go through security again at T3.

Yep, you'll have to exit security and go up to the AirTrain and take it to T3. Here's a map of AirTrain system with directional arrows. http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/atsfo/airtrain/map/
How much time do you have to connect?

Thanks for the replies. I have 1:35 and am sitting in the front of the plane so that should be enough if we are not too delayed on the first leg.

That should be enough time. If you feel like walking, the fastest way is to not go around the circle but to walk across the top floor of the center parking lot.

Your US CP gives you access to the elite checkpoint in T3. There is considerable debate in the UA forum as to if this is actually faster or not. The line tends to be long but it's full of elite travelers and there is no AIT, so people tend to move thru quickly.
You can also use the International G-side security and take an air-side walkway.

Yeah, as of about 2 days ago, 2/3 of the elite lines have scanners now.
So it may actually be faster to go to International G, if it's the right time of day.

As long as things are on time, 1h2m should be sufficient time to connect, correct?
Can we take the shuttle from T3 to T1 that's being used for the intra-California flights, or is that not an option?

Anecdotally, I have the sense that security is slower these days then it has traditionally been. I think 1h2m is just enough time.
Can't see a reason why you wouldn't be able to take the shuttle, though by most accounts that can take a half hour in itself.

Actually, ever since UA began using gates in Terminal 1 about 4 weeks ago, there has been a post-security shuttle that leaves from gate 36. It stops both at Terminal 3, gate 81 (I believe) and at the international terminal (gate 92).
No longer any need to go through security when connecting from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3.

Given that this is a UA shuttle, and the OP is connecting to US, I wouldn't be surprised if he was denied access to the shuttle. Even if he is allowed, the reports are that the delay to get onto a shuttle can be as much as 30 mins, in which case simply walking to T1 and using the priority security line to re-enter would probably be faster.

The OP said he is connecting from US to UA, not the other way around. So he should have a UA boarding pass. The problems with the shuttle have been significantly reduced since it was first put in place - not eliminated but definitely reduced. Unless there was a major delay, I personally would choose to wait rather than go through security again. Also, the OP did not indicate eligibility to go through the priority security line. Of course, YMMV.
