I we arriving into IAD at 1:00 AM and next flight ia at 9:30 AM to MUC the same morning all on UA. Have access to Red Carpet Club but is there any place to go or do that time of the night? Hotel seems like a waste by the time you get there and back to IAD in time for a international flight. Is there a place to rest at the airport or will security run me out?

In my most recent experience, which was a number of years ago on a delayed flight, they will run you out of the remote terminals. I cannot speak to the main terminal but I would guess it stays open. Last flights come on at 130ish and earliest leave at 5am so mostly overlapped.

I have not stayed overnight but there is a hotel on airport grounds (Marriott) and some a few miles away all with shuttle buses.

The UC is closed at that time of night (morning). While you won't get much sleep, there are at least 6 hotels within less than 5 mins. drive time of IAD, all of which run 24-hour shuttle service to pick you up and drop you off the next AM. At least you will get some sleep, a good shower and some hot food.

IAD in the middle of the night is no fun.

you must call most of these hotels to get a shuttle. ask them how long it will take the shuttle to get there.

Are you sure about your timings?
There is no 0930 IAD-MUC departure. There is UA922 IAD-LHR at 0929.
The MUC flights go later in the evening: UA902 at 1732 and LH415 at 2205.
Also, as others have noted, IAD is no place to be spending the night. There are several nearby hotels, the closest being the Marriott, which is pretty much on airport property.

UAPremExecflyer, your correct, I am out on UA922 to LHR connecting to MUC on LH. flight. Time frame is still the same, which hotel would be the best to use?

This Marriott, like I mentioned above, is pretty much on the airport property http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/iadap-washington-dulles-airport-marriott/. Technically, it's a mile from the main terminal.

Given that there are 6 hotels within 5-6 minutes of the IAD pickup area (distance doesn't matter because everybody has to head out the airport loop and back in) and all are served by free shuttle, if you are arriving late and leaving early, you may also have some luck by callint each property (not the toll-free #, but the property itself) and asking if there is anything they can do for a late night/early AM departure. Becs. airport hotels run on a virtually round-the-clock check-in/check-out, they are sometimes glad to have early AM room avail. and may give you a break.

Sleeping in Airports (IAD): http://www.sleepinginairports.net/usa/washington.htm

I'm too old to do that now, and my wife would kill me if I suggested it for the two of us.

Will your bags be checked through? I would assume not, but don't know and that could make a difference. Having to keep all of your checked bags with you, and guard them, as you sleep, could be a hassle. So could be carrying them if you decided to walk to the Marriott, which was kind of pricey when I last checked. Also, if you don't have to check your bags in the next morning, and already have the boarding pass for your flight to LHR, you can get to the airport a little later in the morning. Still not a full night's sleep. I would never choose such a schedule, but it's a done deal.

If you have to take a shuttle, that hotel may not be much better than another. Even if a hotel advertises a 24-hour shuttle you may well have to phone them in advance for arrivals after a certain time (e.g., after midnight). You might check and phone them from baggage claim (some ask you to phone only once you have your bags). Or just take a taxi.
