Looks like Hyatt is adjusting to Wall Street.
Shareholders may like it when Hyatt gets stingy.
Other hotels give hundreds of certificates/points.
What a shame!

They offered the exact same amount the previous 2 years so this year is no different, other than the bloggers are really pushing the promos this year

All of those daily getaway deals are limited.

Yet somehow Hyatt's limited offer is a conspiracy related to Hyatt being a publicly listed company now.

I don't think it's a conspiracy. But Wyndham offered like 500 or so of each of their various deals, which were far more generous than what Hyatt is offering. Hyatt is offering 15 of each. It's not an offer, it's a chance to enter a lottery to win a mediocre prize. Mostly useless and irritating. If Hyatt don't want to participate, they shouldn't; offering such a token amount of packages is just going to annoy people.

Wrong. There are 165 packages being offered:

100 @ 24,000 points, 35 @ 30,000 points, 15 @ 36,000 points, and 15 @ 69,000 points.

Wyndham was apparently a good deal. How many Wyndham points packages were you able to purchase?

The best deals in these promotions, year after year, always sell out very quickly. It's all a crap shoot. If you're interested, go for it. The best deals in this promotion have always been a crap shoot, or if you prefer, a lottery for those that are able to log in and press enter at exactly the right moment.

Wyndham sold 2,000 packages this time -- two thousand.

The best deals in these promotions actually did not sell out as quickly year-after-year in prior years as they are selling out this year. [It's now much more difficult to get the packages this year than it was even last year; and last year was tougher than the prior year but nowhere near as close to as tough as this year.]

[I don't think there are that many people (if any) who have bought as many Daily Getaway packages as I have over the years -- and those were mainly for deals that are far more generous than what Hyatt has offered now or before via these Daily Getaway packages.]

It's now far more akin to a lottery/"crap shoot" than it has ever been before. Perhaps this situation is a sign of a recovering economy, but it's certainly a sign that the travel bloggers have driven a lot more attention onto these deals than ever before. And thus they are harder to get.

Being a publicly-traded company or privately-held company indeed has nothing to do with this situation.

As far as the number of points sets Hyatt offers in Daily Getaways, the deal has not changed from the past two years.

Here is my post from May 2010 (http://boardingarea.com/blogs/loyaltytraveler/2010/05/10/hyatt-points-on-sale-101000-points-tuesday-may-11-1000am-eastern/), the first year of Daily Getaways, showing the same offers as next week.

I have to agree with you about the travel bloggers alerting far more people to these deals and there are just not that many sets of points being offered.

There are still some good deals with Omni Hotels, Gaylord and Loews where the cost to buy nights can be a significant savings on the room rates at certain hotels, yet these deals are not selling out and are still available after the day of Daily Getaways sale.

I never stay at Wyndham but did purchase 2 Wyndham pts packages totaling 78,000 pts for ~$180. This converts to almost 32,000 AA or United Miles.
You really can't beat that.

I feel like I'm trying to get Springsteen tickets. I really want as many of these as I can get, and I have a couple (legal legitimate) tricks up my sleeve; no I'm not sharing. As noted in another post, I'm trying to get enough points to take my in-laws to Paris and I'll need a total of about 150-200,000 to do it.

What is the best way to be involved on the opening minute - would it be refresh your screen on all available offers, or is there a better screen from which to start?

I have to say that was disappointing. We tried the presale and the regular sale, for all offers, but they were all sold out within less than 1 minute!

I mobilized the Red Team (long story about that name) and had 7 people trying to get in.

I was the only one who succeeded; I got the 69K point package.

The only thing I can say is, I refreshed repeatedly, and have a T1 connection.

It does seem like the publicity was much much greater this year than in past years.

Seems like maybe Hyatt could leverage the promo by running a "get 50% bonus on point purchases" promotion. Yes it would be a lot more expensive than the US Travel thingy, but let's face it, they are looking for buzz, not necessarily to give something away.

Anyone who spent more than 2 minutes in a "fruitless" exercise has no cause to complain. If you didn't get in right away, you weren't going to get in. That was pretty clear to me from the start.

No luck here either. The # of packages was a huge let down, especially considering how many the other hotel chains offered. This was the only day I wasn't able to get at least one of the packages and that included a couple Wyndham packages, a couple Hertz, one Hilton, & one Marriott.

If it's not enough -- which I suspect is the case -- just rent an apartment in Paris and bring along your in-laws. Or go on priceline/hotwire and buy a few rooms.

The amount of interest in this deal which, objectively, isn't particularly great, is remarkable. I think folks like to win something. If I were to post a deal for a nice $240 hotel room in Paris, I don't think I'd start a sensation.

I wound up getting one package, the big one (69K points).

I think if you posted a deal for a $700 room for $240, you'd get a lot of attention.

I don't understand the irritation, because all this offer takes is 2 minutes of your time. I spent a lot more to line up people to apply also, but it's probably a personal "thing." My wife is a bargain shopper, so she kind of likes the idea of getting something marked down. If I were desperate for the points, I have had some luck buying them from co-workers for 1.25 cents, which isn't that much more than the US Travel deal.

I think Hyatt is getting the "buzz" they wanted from it. There certainly seemed to be a lot of people interested.

By the way - I've never gotten shut out of Springsteen tickets when I wanted them. In fact, the first time, I lucked out. It was right after the Time/Newsweek covers, and he cancelled a show at the University of Maryland because they couldn't get the big stage into the basketball arena, and instead scheduled three shows at much smaller McDonough Arena at Georgetown - where I just happened to be attending at the time.

I used fios connection and I kept pressing F5, and I was able to get it right when it loaded.

I thought it was impossible at first since I missed the presale, but I ended up getting it. So its not all that impossible, its just the timing and most importantly, luck.

Yeah, but those $700 Paris hotel rooms are priced like those $8000 biz class tickets. They're basically only worth it at those levels when you're paying with someone else's money.

I used my 2 free Hyatt nights from the credit card offer in Kauai. Yes, the cost of the rooms (had I bought them) was half the value of using them in Paris, but there were still much better value, since I could enjoy the resort. A hotel in Paris is pretty much a place to sleep.

I did send some friends to the Park Hyatt Paris on the credit card deal and they were underwhelmed. It's only a hotel -- one that you can't really afford to buy anything at.

Last time I was in Paris, I redeemed Choice points (purchased from Discover America) at the well-located Andre Latin. It was no Park Hyatt. But is was about 30 bucks.

As with any point redemptions, it is not how much bang you get out of the points but getting a good deal on the redemption that you want to get. The 2 nights in Kauai is a good redemption to you, but a Paris Vendome redemption is a good redemption for others.

The real question is whether the "buzz" is good buzz or bad buzz. Most likely bad buzz from the majority that were unable to get in on this. This was more like a lottery chance due to the small offering.

I would never use them for the lowest levels.

Just as an example (maybe not a great one), the Hyatt Place in Vegas, on Paradise Rd., is 12K points per night. The rate on the Hyatt website is about $110 a night, give or take a bit (I tried two stays, one during the week, one on a weekend, they difference was small). Allowing for taxes, that's maybe $125. So you're getting a penny a point.

But it's worse. A few years ago I went to Vegas and bid for a hotel on Priceline, and got this hotel, for about $60 or so, including taxes and fees. So to pay 12K points would be getting 1/2 cent per point.

I agree with another post, that $700 at PHV in Paris is not something you'd pay from your own pocket. I'm only staying there because of the credit card promotion, and because it's my honeymoon. Even if I could have bought unlimited points for 1 cent, it would still be borderline to stay there, rather than perhaps a 4-star hotel I could get on Priceline for $170 or so.

Finally, it seems pretty clear to me that the key was hitting F5 repeatedly. Some of the people I had helping me, I got the impression from them that they were only pressing it every 15 seconds or even less often.

Yeah, it's hard to find good help these days. I've had my wife try to help me on her lunch hour a couple of times with Discover America this year, and she's gotten nothing -- even though I've "won" something each time. I think you have to be a little crazy to win this stuff. :)

I'd use it for cat 1's too. 5k is really cheap compared to some of the paid rates. Bali Hyatt for example is around 150-200 per night. You could be getting 3+ cents per point.
