I need to go from NY to HKG. I see that when i search on the Singapore web site the sfo-hkg flight on SQ is available. I also see on the united web site that jfk -sfo is availbale. My question is can i book this as a one way award with SQ under the star alliance chart for 100,000 miles in first. Or does the inventory for the star alliance awards work differently than the inventory for a straight up SQ award?
Thanks

I presume you want to use SQ miles?

Inventories are different. What you see on SQ is for KrisFlyer members to redeem. SQ has a separate inventory that it gives to partner airlines for redemption on it's flights. This is typically much less than what is offered to their own members.

Also, keep in mind that if you use SQ miles online to redeem you get a 15% discount on all-SQ metal flights. So it maybe cheaper to buy a positioning flight from JFK-SFO and redeem a First award from SFO-HKG for 70,125 miles (after the 15% discount).

Either that, or you can book an EWR-HKG one way award on SQ Business for 78,625 miles (after discount). Frankly, I haven't found a great deal of difference between SQ's "new" First and Business classes (other than a bit better food, free pyjama's and a little more expensive amenity kit) The biz class seat is enormously wide and you will find the service/food more than satisfactory.
