Dear Sir or Madam,
We are conducting research into attitudes towards long distance travel and would be extremely grateful if you would complete our online questionnaire. This is available online at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/longdisttravel It should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
We would like to gather responses from as many people as possible, so your answers are very important to us. Please be assured that all responses will be anonymous and confidential.
In late summer 2012, we will provide a short summary of our findings. As all responses received will be anonymous, if you would like a copy of the results or wish to know more information about this study, please email matthew.caygill@ncl.ac.uk
Thank you for your time.

This forum is specifically about travel in the UK and Ireland. You might have more luck in the Travel Buzz forum.

Survey seems focused on high speed rail in the UK, so best here.
Indeed so. However, if you do feel another forum would be more appropriate after looking around, please ask me to move it (click on the "alert a moderator" button), rather than cross-posting in a different forum.

this is phD research???maybe in UK, but in usa, this hardly qualifies as GED research. i cannot believe real phd's attached their name to a piece of "research" like this.

That's a bit harsh! I thought it was relatively low on the kinds of ambiguities and potential for false readings that often bedevil these kinds of things. Based in one of the remoter parts of the UK though, the idea that >50 miles is 'long distance' is a bit bemusing! Is 'long distance' one of those things with an 'official' definition, like >2 pints (or whatever) being 'binge drinking'??
The question about whether you would personally pay more for HST I thought could be misinterpreted. I read it as would I pay more out of my own pocket, but if I read it as would I pay more of my employers money for travel I undertook in person, I'd have given a different answer.

Damn you would have loved the questionnaire that I was asked to complete last week by students of the Universidad de Magdalena studying tourism on Colombia's Caribbean coast.
Q. What improvements would you like to see to make Taganga a more attractive tourism destination?
a) Strongly agree
b) Agree
c) Disagree
d) Strongly disagree

I didn't see anywhere that said conducing the survey was the entirety of the research for the PhD. I imagine that the thesis will entail a good deal more than conducting the survey and analyzing its results.

i reread the survey. it brings back old memories of Junior Achievement(highschool practice set up company and make money). we started a survey company. this is high school studentry, in about 1954. the company was very successful. although i do not recall mucn of the company, i dare say we ran surveys that were much mor sophisicated than this" phd" survey. by the by, many of my friends have phd's, and have one my self. i am certain all would be embarrassed to put their name to a piece of poof like this.
about 20 years ago, BA got really nasty. they did a similar survey to determine attitudes of passengers toward BA. it was an excellent and i presume useful survey. BA made an almost immediate and radical change in treatment of paying passengers.(i was surveyed at lhr, lgw, and bwi in the same two week period)
a survey of this type is necessary, and useful. claiming it to be work for advanced degree is pure bs.
